So England in the Final

The commentary on the penalty decision was a disgrace tbh.

It's one thing to be excited about England scoring but it's another thing altogether for commentators like Lee Dixon to publicly state that they don't care about a decision being wrong - you just know that's going to come back to bite him on the a*se in the final.

When you read Uefa's specific guidelines, it seems that the referee made the correct decision based on the current interpretation of the law. I think this is one of those areas where it feels wrong to most people but no error has been made.

What I would say: there is an increased risk of injury when studs are raised and the leg is straight. Even if it's the other player's movement that initiates contact (Kane's follow-through), it's the mass behind the studs that makes it a potentially dangerous challenge. Dumfries would have attempted a different kind of block had he been closer to Kane, but had to risk that less controlled, studs up challenge because Kane had space. I can see why Uefa don't want to green light that, as it will result in a few broken bones over the course of a season.

This was the point I was making to mates who didn't think it was a pen. It's the studs up and slightly reckless nature of the attempted block. I think Dumfries is risking a pen if he doesn't get that block attempt right, which is of course what happened. It's then up to interpretation - I think there needs to be some wording in the rules that the referee has some sort of discretion, dependent on the situation, to make a decision which he feels is 'right' - the same could be applied to handball etc, although how you exactly word etc is another thing.

There will of course be the hypocritical response of those who say it doesn't matter whether the decision is right or wrong, as long as England win, but you get that from most fans I guess

So is Southgate good? I was amused they signed him up to manage for the next world cup but his record is undeniably impressive. He may finally win this one which will be the end of the argument, but this tournament started shakily (like they almost always do with him).

England has had a massively talented era too and it could be said they could have outperformed their current levels but some will say the end justifies the means. So is Southgate good?

For once he did what most of us were crying out for him to do with his subs and we won the game without ET. Not exactly rocket science, but he gets credit for not getting it wrong this time.

Been a great audition for when he takes over from ten hag after he’s sacked.

Nobody was screaming for that to be a penalty. It wasn't a clear and obvious error, the sort of thing VAR is supposed to be put in place for. Kane even had his shot off and it went over the bar. So to get a pen for that is just lucky.

He's still an average manager. Average managers can get things right occasionally but most of us were asking for Kane to be dropped sooner anyway.

It's like we're being owed all the bits of luck that we didn't get in previous tournaments under different managers and it's all happening under Southgate's watch. The record books won't see that and will just look back at him as having a very good record with England. Only, if we don't actually win anything then we've underachieved, all things considered.

LOL. He is. Isn't he.

But .... he's right. It was a pen. Under the rules of the game.

Wouldnt call it reckless though. That would have been a Red Card if it was. But he could have easily bust Harry's foot doing that.

BTW if you listen to his podcast, Ian Wright comes across as an eloquent and very thoughtful guy, in addition to the famously warm heart. He's one of the very best people in our football discourse, and anyone who disagrees can fuсk off.

Interestingly, my friends in Spain and Portugal all thought it was a clear pen... One of those decisions that seems crazy in the PL, but normal in Europe?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, certainly more prevalent. Think in the PL we’re more used to having a higher bar if someone’s got the shot off and subsequently fouled.

posted on 11/7/24

Harsh decision as it looks like he was just trying to block the shot but at the same time it could have easily been broken metatarsals for Kane.
Wouldn't have been bothered if it wasn't a penalty.

posted on 11/7/24

If that decision went against us and we had lost 2-1 you'd have never heard the end of it.

It wasn't a pen. Kane got his shot away cleanly before the inevitable impact came due to a follow through. And even then it was minimal.

We got very lucky there.

Leading with your studs at knee height is reckless. It might be a bit soft, but it is a penalty under the current rules. If that happens anywhere else on the field it is a freekick. Penalty was the right decision.
