I saw Souness talking about him on YouTube the other day. He didn’t say that much which was wrong to be honest.
"England were at their best when they went a goal behind,' he added. 'All of a sudden they started taking risks. They had to be braver and risk making a mistake, risk passing it forward or trying to play someone in."
Which is Souness? You've just slated a 19 year old for taking risks, then say we were better when we took risks

'I think he's really good on the ball, he's very talented on the ball,' Souness told the Up Front podcast.
'But he doesn't fully understand the position. He wanders, he empties the middle of the field too readily.

'I watched him against Iceland (during England's last Euro 2024 warm-up game) and he was getting thrown to the left and thrown to the right.
'He came on as a substitute when holding onto a 1-0 lead (during England's first Euro 2024 game against Serbia) and the first thing he did was chase down the goalkeeper and try to put him under pressure.
'It's naivety, he's still learning the game."
I don't think he's wrong to be fair, Mainoo does drift about, specially going into wider areas to try and work triangles with the fullback/ winger, but equally that's how we were so threatening against Holland (without it Watkins doesn't score).
Mainoo is 18, he's still learning, and I'm sure, followed the coaches instruction. He didn't have a good game against Spain because we were overrun in the middle.
In fairness to Souness, he also criticised Rice later on in the comments.
Seems very harsh. Don’t agree with that. If I had any criticism of mainoo is that he doesn’t seem to have the ability to spot defence splitting passes, something souness’s other crush pogba did. Thought mainoo was decent and steady for England without being exceptional in any way, had a good tournament.
Typical Souness to go for the easy target when the reality is that the established big names let the side down. Bellingham and Kane in particular were very disappointing, but we’ve heard from Neville that Kane is England’s GOAT and now Sourness lays into Mainoo, who was arguably our standout midfielder.

He has done little more that criticise his positioning but qualified it by saying he was 18 and learning the position....and he's absolutely right!
Don't turn into the scousers who cannot tolerate any criticism of their players, club etc, merited or not?
Mainoo had a decent tournament, he did ok without doing anything stand out, but he did look rather lost in the final.
Souness reserved his biggest criticism for Rice and his 1 forward pass in the final stat.

It's pretty clear Souness is talking about risk with the ball. He goes on to cite Rice's single forward pass to demonstrate his point.
Pressing is a team action. To do so unilaterally is to do it badly, it is a risk but a stupid one and hence Souness' criticism of his positioning and decision making in the critical CM role
The incident Souness cites in the Serbia game isn't a great one - Mainoo had come on to replace Bellingham for those last few minutes and was stationed quite high up the pitch, he wasnt really playing in CM. I remember the incident he's talking about and I didn't think it was unwise at the time (plus I'm inclined to think it was under instruction as it's not something we see Mainoo do often, if ever).
That being said, there is a valid point in there somewhere about Mainoo's off the ball work both in and out of possession - but it's to be expected given how inexperienced he is. I didn't that Souness was that harsh, just a sensationalised headline from the Daily Mail (who'd have thought...)

I get what you're saying, but I don't think this can be levelled as much at Mainoo, that's not to see he didn't do it as well.
Doesn't help with how we were setting up to play and with Kane's lack of mobility and movement, there were rarely passing lines that opened up.
Some of the best moments came from Mainoo/Palmer or Mainoo/Foden's 1/2 touch football. Outside of that we were asking Saka to just try and beat his man out wide.
Fans in faux outrage at honest assessment shocker
I get why Utd fans wouldn't like Souness, beyond the obvious then his constant criticisms about Pogba got to the point of being really odd.
But when you look beneath the headlines, I'm not sure he's said a lot wrong here. Summarising, he said Mainoo is really talented on the ball but needs to develop off the ball. That's not a scandalous take imo. Frankly it would be astonishing if a 19 yr old with less than a seasons experience were the finished article.

Souness was talking about Mainoos positioning , he wasnt critical of Mainoos use of the ball.
The bit where he talks about England use of the ball starts with "The former Liverpool midfielder also slammed England's style of play during the final, highlighting Rice's lack of ambition in particular."
He's not singling out Mainoo, more Rice, and as you say he had some good moments.
There was no coherent plan in the middle of the park and that's on the manager, not the 18 yo rookie.
He was right about Pogba. Will he be right about Mainoo?

It's pretty clear Souness is talking about risk with the ball. He goes on to cite Rice's single forward pass to demonstrate his point.
Pressing is a team action. To do so unilaterally is to do it badly, it is a risk but a stupid one and hence Souness' criticism of his positioning and decision making in the critical CM role
