So What Have We Learned From Pre Season?

My main take from yesterday (and I was at the game) is that we don’t have the players to play tippy tappy from the back every time, and that sometimes Vic needs to just boot it up the pitch!

The defence looked very wobbly.

That said we should be ok with our first eleven and with the new boys coming in.

If we are going to make mistakes playing out from the back it is best to do it in a pre season friendly and hopefully it gets ironed out before the important games.

I just had a look to see how our first opponents Leicester are doing and they lost 3-0 to Lens yesterday. Not that results mean much at the moment however, that does sound a bit concerning if you’re a Leicester fan.

It’s going to be ironed out by next Monday?

I understand that’s the way they’ve been told to play, but Ange’s intransigence and unwillingness to adapt cost us last season.

For me if we are going to play out from the back even when pressed we need the technical players to be able to do it. Players who are confident recieving the ball under pressure. Bentancur for bissouma made a big difference in the regard. Romero is also vital in this area, his passing out from the back was great again yesterday.

Also learned that this is the most talented group of young players we've seen for a long time. Bergvall gives me modric vibes. Gray looks like he'll be a quality player, Moore did more in his 20 mins than Johnson on his 45.

I hope the pathways to the first team are not closed for these players.

Thought it was interesting that moore was first on ahead of Solomon yesterday.

Lankshear seems to be ahead of Scarlett and veliz (now loaned out) in the pecking order.

Nothing much other than giving the players a run out.

Thought we looked more solid in the 2nd half and we kept a clean too.

Just looked up the team which faced Brentford in the first game last season. Skipp and Emerson started.

I think we will stronger this time around providing everyone is fit. Never know, we might sign someone else before we play Leicester 🤞

Oh and Deki's best position is the no.9.

Stay humble brothers.

That we still need to score more than our leaky defence concedes to win matches.

I watched the highlights of yesterday’s match…

Horrific defending once again…

Spence is no left back

Davies is no LB or LCB… too slow & ponderous on the ball…

Whenever Davies plays, we tend to concede

We need to buy for both positions…

Pretty evident that Reguilon, Solomon & Lo Celso are surplus to requirements…

Need an upgrade for Johnson

Not finished in the transfer market… that’s obvious!!

It’s shown that we haven’t done enough in the transfer market to play the football ange wants to play

We needed a back up LB and LCB. Spence and Davies are nowhere near good enough

We also needed a back up keeper to challenge Vic, who is having a bit of a wobble and a number 6

Then a tricky winger to draw out the low block

We got none of these

We have a top four first 11, but any injuries and we will slide away

I didn't see much of the pre-season games but watching the highlights of the Bayern game, our performance looked very reminiscent of the way we played towards the end of last season. If we take that into this PL season then Ange isn't going to last very long.

Not much it seems. I get the continuing to play out from the back cause Ange just wants to keep instilling this mindset into the team until it becomes habitual but the set piece defending needs a different approach.

What Mack said.

Shame it all won`t happen under Levy.

Difficult for me to say as I've not seen much more than the goals.

Excited to gray and bergvall.

My hopes for solanke mainly slant towards we've gotta gotta get a striker purchase right eventually....🤣

From reading your match day thread for the pre season games, the worry is we'll still be vulnerable from set plays.

Did we learn that playing loads of kids in the first two matches against the poor teams is no indication that they are going to get a look in this season?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mikey Moore, Bergvall and Gray will. A 17 and two 18 year olds. Decisions to be made on Lankshear, Devine and Donley.

Can’t do it all in one window unfortunately. We’ve had 2 with ange and made progress. Unless we get battered loads again and finish outside of Europe he deserves 2 more windows

Ange has been well supported compared to other managers. We've spent a lot under him already and addressed many positions. Onus is falling on him now to make the most of what he's got to work with this season.

Hes had one season and other managers recently have been just as ‘backed’

The squad needed a lot of surgery when he came in and we lost our best player last summer.

I’ll agree that if we are getting battered again in big games and picking up the same form as end of last season isn’t going to keep Ange at spurs for sure

posted on 11/8/24

Even if Ange isn't here for very long the problems with the squad won't go away. A new man will only inherit the same problems. He may go with a different system to counter it but we still lack depth at LB, LCB, RW and a decent back up keeper. Although don't think Austin did much wrong and 'maybe' worth a shot as no2. Luca Gunther will hopefully be knocking at the door soon as well.

Kind of glad Bayern scored from a set piece yday because it should give Ange a reminder to work on defending set pieces in the lead up to the Leicester game.

That said, I am still willing to give Ange a further two windows after this one. All the top managers have a stubbornness about them.

Patience and stay humble.

We lost Kane but I think that was to be expected before Ange even arrived. Spent well over £100m in the first summer window and almost changed to a completely new back line with some very good quality there and then another back up option for around £30m. I hear he's had targets that he wanted like BJ and Solanke.

He's had some good support so far.

I doubt these were the first names on his list when he joined us but his arm was kind of twisted due to our homegrown issue.

Neto, Eze and Gallagher were his primary targets according to reports. Maddison too but he got him.
