No they didn't seem like over paying at the time. United paid more for Maquire and Chelsea paid more for Kepa not that long after we signed Virg and Allison. Both were the right price for two holes in the squad that needed improving at the time.

If you are comparing transfers with CFC and Utd, the 2 biggest over payers in the PL, then that's hardly a benchmark.
In a way, Liverpool set the benchmark, which other teams would cite in their valuations of players.
anyway, Maguire signed 2 seasons after VVD and came as a league champion, and yes, they over paid.
VVD came from Saints and was pretty decent for them, but not world class. He became world class and now seems like very good value, but i would disagree his world record fee was justified at the time. Same for Allison really. Looking back it was some of the best business you've ever done. But even now in this crazy market, few keepers have ever cost more than Allison and few CBs more than VVD.
The owners are probably pretty reluctant to spend.
I don't follow baseball other than going to games, but over here I've picked up a fair bit on the conversation around the Red Sox and the reaction to owners, and everyone goes on about how cheap FSG are etc. Bill Simmons in particularly is a huge critic of them.
No idea of the fiscal situation at Liverpool but if you can't get the top targets you wanted for specific positions and already have a squad good enough to "compete" and I put it like that because it could mean winning something or being there or there about then being patient and waiting on players that will improve the team is maybe the smart thing to do?
No idea really and it could be what I suggested or it could be the owners are right but as was said earlier other than perhaps an top no6 they should have enough to be amongst it this season

They just don’t spend their own money, and don’t provide loans for playing staff up front either.
Like I said, we made a £9m in the last accounts.
It’s why we do more business than most in January I reckon, as we know whether we’ve made it into the knockouts of the CL by then.
Furthermore, we have an absolutely whopping wage bill.

Not sure about this, Virg's quality was known about when he was at Celtic let alone Southampton, it's why we spent a year chasing him. I don't recall much on whether both were overpriced at the time. Both were seen at about the right price for the quality of player we needed in both positions. Both were also seen as a vast improvement on what we had in goal and defence and expected us to kick on, challenge City and push on for trophies. Rival fans in the wind up may have said we over paid at the time in the hope we would continue losing finals and providing lols. That doesn't make it true though.

All I can say about his time at Celtic is of course he improved after he left us but by what amount I'd certainly argue, of course it is an easier league than the EPL but even with us he stood out a MILE from others and in the European games was comfy as well, not something a lot of our DCs, and we've had a few decent ones can really say

No idea about Liverpool's finances or transfer strategy but this seems like the kind of 'opportunity' club signing that doesn't usually work out. We've seen a ton of them at Spurs. I mean, if Slot really wanted a RW surely there's better options than Chiesa.
Wasn't so long ago they were bidding for £100m odd for Caicedo and £50m for Lavia so I doubt it.

Does seem like a bit of a no risk, late window, gotta do something to add to the squad kinda buy, and an odd one as Liverpool dont usually make these kind of singings, they're usually younger, with the best years ahead of them and that makes even more sense seeing as some players are coming to the end of their careers and they must be looking to the future.

Indeed. A quick glance at the 22/23 figures and LFCs total wages are £120m more than Spurs'.
Some of that is offset against having higher total revenue, by about £40m
Our amortisation of player transfers is higher by about £20m (£107m vs £127m).
Although we showed a £86m loss, most of that (£77m) is depreciation of property & plant - ie The stadium), so if you take that out (which you do for PSR), we would be in a similar small loss position to LFC, although we get there by different approaches.
Yep.
I can’t say I’ve been a fan of our summer business, in fact I think it’s been an absolute sh!tshow.
But Chiesa is better than Clarke who we sold for £10m, probably better than Carvalho, who we sold for £25m and certainly better than Doak, who is our only other RWF at the club.
It’s shrewd business imo
They already have a quality squad and will only spend money on the right players that will genuinely improve them. Same method City and Arsenal are using and neither of them are broke.

Only because he’s an idiot. Lavia looks like a very decent player if he can stay fit.
Chiesa also seems like a no brainer for a €15m fee even if his form has fallen off a cliff since the Euros. Only 26 years old so they can still sell him for some sort of fee if things don’t work out. I don’t know why we haven’t gone for him ourselves considering we desperately need another forward.
That GK isn`t joining them to be a no.2, so it looks like Allison will be leaving next summer, along with Salah, VVD and TAA.
Chiesa smacks of an opportunistic panic signing to appease the fans, he will hardly ever play and is not the same player since his ACL injury, his pace is virtually non exitstent these days.
Who knows, could be the owners preparing to asset strip the squad before selling the club
Lots of speculative wishful thinking from Spurs fans. Based on Dev, Billy and a few others we can safely say there's nothing to worry about.
