I watch on ESPN. No decent footie in sight, so this will do just fine.

What is AFL. A quick Google said "Australian FOOTY".

It looks like a rugby ball with extremely gay uniforms and skinny men not manly enough for rugby.

Where is the "footy"?

I got hooked watching it last year. Love the way the sport alternates between slightly brutal chaos and more structured passages of play. Love the fluctuations in momentum you seem to get in every game. Love the moustache-and-mullet combos and the sheer Aussieness of the spectacle.

As for the rugby comparison:
- The physical demands are very different. You don't have scrums etc so absolute strength isn't a necessity, but it's played on cricket pitches and very end-to-end so some players end up running 20km in a match.
- Rugby (union) is for ัunts.

The physical demands in AFL are extraordinary. Non stop running and a constant fear of being caught with the ball leads to organised chaos. And when players go up to try and mark the ball in the 50 metres and catch the ball under pressure to be able to take a shot on goal - it’s such a moment. For me it’s hard to enjoy soccer as much after watching AFL

Yeah it’s a strange paradox as the losers get one more chance so they kinda stopped trying once the game got away as they didn’t wanna risk injuries for next weeks elimination final against the winners of the Bulldogs/Hawthorn game

Being a newcomer to the sport, I didn't know that. Well, I fancy Hawthorn to handily beat Port Adelaide.

Tonight’s game however is a knockout game. Who finishes in positions 1-4 get a second chance whereas 5-8 have but one chance so your Bulldogs could be in trouble if they lose. Supposedly raining in Melbourne tonight which will make things more chaotic

Took me a good ten minutes to get my head around that, Robb
