Off topic - Public transport rant - trains

posted on 12/9/24

The train I normally get is 10p cheaper for a return than a single so all the locals get a return ticket and the good ones leave the return ticket on top of the ticket machine if they are only going one way so can just pick that up and travel for free. Doesn't work if you need to be back that same day obviously.

For reference - I used to pick up a first class ticket from Wolverhampton to Euston for anywhere between £40 and £80 return, only 5 years ago.

The same ticket for next Wednesday is £250.

Lol.

I can get from my local train station to Lisbon (200 miles away, so the same as Manc to London) for €24 if I book a week in advance. The most I’d ever have to pay, buying an open ticket on the day, would be €48.

State owned rail company, prices regulated by the govt.

The Brits allowed the Tories to sell their souls to private shareholders and are reaping the rewards of unfettered boot-on-the-neck capitalism.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Didnt the Portuguese Govt recently write-off about 2bn in debt from the national railway?

posted on 12/9/24

SNCF has about ten times that amount of debt.

It's all very well blaming capitalism and the Tories blah blah blah but its either the user or the tax payer who pays for it.

That's nice. Reminds me of when people give up parking tickets paid for if there's some time left, little reminders we're a society

Yep, in 2022, which I believe is about one-seventh of what the UK exchequer ploughs into the UK operational rail network every year.

The biggest difference is that nobody is creaming vast profits off the Portuguese rail network.

Again, the UK exchequer ploughs *seven times* as much into the UK rail network *annually* as the PT exchequer wrote off once in 2022.

I’m sure that the private sector would run the road network much more efficiently and at a reduced cost to the taxpayer…

Whether it be trains, tubes, or whatever mode of transport, I've been fortunate enough to have used various systems abroad, and perhaps I have just been in holiday mode, but they seem more efficient, cleaner and cheaper than what we have in the UK.

Regardless of who is in charge, we don't seem to provide public services very well, whether they are run by the private or public sector. Compared to most countries, we are still a relatively low taxed country, and we don't seem to invest properly in our services, or just fob it off on the private sector, who surprise surprise, seem more interested in making profits than really ensuring they provide great services.

If it's state-run, the government don't run it well, if it's privately owned, companies don't seem to be severely held to account if they don't meet required standards etc.

We are like a badly run football club with too many luxury players, but have limitless numbers of fans who just keep ploughing money into us.................

Im the simp?

You are comparing systems of countries where one has 7 times the population and a vastly bigger railway network than the other. I wonder which one may cost the most to run

And i was referring to the Portuguese Government clearing debt, not the cost of running the network, which is what your UK exchequer is referring to.

I wasn't around but a few people have told me of the state of the rail system when it was sold. It sounded as though it was a dire state.

And even though it's privatised, many fares are still regulated by the government and network rail is largely funded too.

It's a mess, just like the NHS and Royal Mail, semi-privatisation results in a lack of accountability and drive for continuous improvement of services.

I guess you have to consider whether an affordable, government owned rail system had a positive enough impact on the economy to justify what would be significant losses.

Even if private railway profits were £0, it'd still be expensive and badly run.

Not directly but I'm sure the Govt have our pensions in there getting a return, as will many private pensions.

What's your job by the way. Does it rely on making profits to allow for your continued employment and investment into the company, and a return on investment, or is there someone just bailing out losses and ignoring any need to drive performance and efficiencies.
