In real time i immediately thought red. The replay told a different story. I don’t like Fernandes but he was hard done to in my book.
I dont think it was a red card, clumsy..yes...stupid...yes...but not a red card, yellow at best imo.
Wasn't a red but the ref has done us a favour in the long run. This manager has to be replaced.
thought it was harsh, on the plus side you were better when he went off though so every cloud
From the ref's angle you can see why he gave it, but I think it was a harsh red

We didn’t get a single freekick for these 3 clear red card fouls by Arsenal players 1000x worse than what Fernandes did today. That makes it more annoying. Who also remembers this? https://youtu.be/iY2ApmKFfjI?si=Sv_KGiotlKwOfPPL All these incidents the opposition didn’t even get a foul for us.
Yeah, ridiculous decision. I actually think that might get overturned on appeal, even though they don't do that often with VAR in place.

It was very harsh. I'm more angry at how pathetic we were before the red card though. Spurs could have been 3 up by that point anyway so it's not an excuse we can use.
The manager's tactics don't work in this league. They might have worked in the pub league in Holland but they don't over here. Teams are much better here and actually have top managers who have a clue.
I think if the ref had been allowed to watch a replay, he’d have retracted his decision.
Every chance the club will appeal and win. It simply wasn’t serious foul play.

Get the feeling the ref thought he went in with his studs, which was my first thought with Maddison/Spurs players reactions. Why on Earth VAR aren't overturning that though, I don't know. It's a nothing challenge.

I think the ref would have reversed his decision, had he been called to the monitor. I suppose it all boils down to whether you consider there to have been a clear and obvious error made.
Personally, I was surprised VAR didn’t intervene and I expect a successful appeal will be made by Utd.
Not a red, I have a lot of issues with the consistency of how the refs apply the law but with this one I'm just outright confused at how VAR didn't deem the red as an error by the ref.
I don't think it was a red but not a clear and obvious error. I doubt they'll change anything after the fact.

I think it was though, I think it was a very understandable one because of the way it unfolded (I think most people thought the ref had it right on first viewing), but it seemed like a fairly obvious error.
I guess the clear and obvious thing is where the grey area comes in.

Should keep his studs in the ground not on someone's leg. Funny as funk seeing utd fans crying about it tbf.
Its not Harsh, it was an absolute joke decision from the Ref.

He slips, the player gets away from him and he attempts to stop the attack which is a yellow, however he catches him high up the leg. I don't think there was enough in it myself to be a red but I can see how some might. Therefore not a clear and obvious error, which will be why VAR didn't do anything after checking, although for me these are the incidents they should be sending the referee to the monitor. No point sending him for clear and obvious errors which is what they seem to use it for, considering the overturn rate after watching the screen.
I guess, but with the "I can see how some might", that line of thinking makes the clear and obvious parameters of VAR basically useless unless we're talking about a handball that was given for a header or something

--------------
Catching someone high on the leg is not necessarily serious foul play though, as far as im aware. That's what VAR have got to ve looking at really - could it meet the threshold for serious foul play? I just don't see how it does, in any way whatsoever - in which case it's a clear and obvious error.

It reminds me of people on a jury who ask ‘but how can we be sure?’.
You can’t. That’s why it’s called ‘beyond reasonable doubt’.
I think some people are equally confused by the clear and obvious line, and assume it must mean cast iron errors, when no such clarification has been provided.

Exactly. It should be taken out of the equation. If the VAR disagrees with the ref, they send him to the screen, unless it's a factual call.
