It’s simple - the ball moved in a way it shouldn’t have!
“ Still difficult because when you make this kind of mistake you're disappointed for him. I can't say anything. We just spoke about the action and said the ball changed direction when it touched the ground and it was surprising - happy for me but not so happy for him.”
From their manager.
Whether the ball moved, it hit a divot or kicked up
piece of turf, or he was concussed, I've cooled down
quickly on this one. That was a terrific team
performance away, against a very good team.
International break now. Regroup. Get healthier.
Move on to the rest of the season.
these things happen, he's just misjudged the flight / bounce of the ball, simple as that. Hes just a human being, we all make mistakes, its not the end of the world and there is no need to destroy Meslier over it. Nothing to see / move on.
Worth noting that Mes made a worldie against Coventry at 2-0 and another one tonight which unluckily came off the post to their player to tap in. A d then that howler. Who'd be a keeper?
most bizarre bit of goalkeeping i've ever seen
Before these last 2 very difficult away games, I’d have taken 2 points …

I feel the same.
They barely created anything outside their goal.
We are so good at preventing clear goal scoring opportunities.
That was the best performance we have come up against this season and we should and deserved the win.
We’ve been on the wrong end of a lot of moments this season so far but moments don’t decide league tables, performances do and our performances have been excellent.
On reflection, irrespective of who or what was responsible for that bizarre aberration last night, I just hope this does not adversely affect Meslier's confidence.
It won’t affect him because it was just a weird bounce.
Now if it had gone through his legs I would be fuming at him. Bottom line is he was right behind the ball ready to just pick it up and it weirdly bounced to his right.
It’s a team game and to be honest that ball should not have been anywhere near our goal after our 96th minute corner.
A good week though. Home thrashing and two good away performances - especially last night.
Our midfield looked very good too.

Brilliant👍😁
just seen the goal again on the beeb which showed a different angle & it shows a definite deviation
Pascal came straight to Mes' defence and said it did
deviate. Which I hope helps Mes get over this. I'm sure
he will as he has the support of a great set of lads in
that dressing room. And importantly, Farke.
On to the rest of the season.
He could have caught the bl00dy thing.
Still fuming. Criminal waste.
The more I think about this horrible error of judgement by Meslier whether the ball wildly deviated with spin like a cricket ball as another poster referenced, hit some debris on the pitch or slight concussion played it's part it still happened and will live in everyone's memory for ever and that obviously includes Meslier, his team mates and Farke and that begs the question how do you go forward from this?
Meslier I imagine won't have ever felt worse in his whole life this morning and must be reliving that howler time and time again and his team mates and DF must be thinking will it happen again?
And that's the problem as much as I do feel sympathy on a human level for Meslier that goal conceded last night although I would like to think it was a one off and won't happen again and he will grow stronger and better from this horrible situation I'm not sure his team mates and Farke can trust his often erratic reactions previously to this latest aberration to not rear it's ugly head again.
Therefore although I've previously stated DF must still back Meslier and play him against Shef Utd because to not do so would surely completely destroy the lads already fragile confidence at the same time I also wouldn't be surprised if Farke doesn't see last night as the final straw because Meslier's team mates must surely have had their confidence and trust severely dented in Meslier's abilities and either Darlow or Cairns are given the gloves and Meslier is "rested".
He was actually having a good game. A few passes were ropey but it’s a really tough job that he’s expected to do sometimes with that aspect. He was good in the air and claimed pretty much everything he could. Great save with the one that rebounded for the goal. Not much he could have done about that.
Such a shame. We as a crowd need to support him against Sheff Utd and how that he doesn’t make many more mistakes.
He needs replacing if we go up though.

100% agree. I said it on the match day thread.
I thought it was his best game in a long time.

Have a feeling our fans will rally around him.
Vast majority will. The human side of this, for me,
overrides everything else. Now I've cooled down.

Agree.
I don't want to kick him when he's down, but I am
definitely in the camp that if we do go up, we have
to upgrade at keeper.
I thought the rumored move to Marseilles would've
been the making of him. I wonder if that was a
let down for Mes when it fell through?
One wonders how tennis players cope with top spin, back spin, sidespin virtually every shot at many times the speed.
Wouldn't be the first concussed goalie gaff - Karius anyone?

Interestingly, Klopped dropped Karius like a hot potato and he hasn’t been seen since. We’ve held on to Mes for five years and the last three have been poor.
Meslier needs our support full stop...
My view is still that we had a corner in the last minute and blew it!
But going on to the goal. I’ve watched it a lot of times and obviously it spins off Firpo’s head and that helps create an awkward bounce. But something I noticed on this video is that when the ball bounces it seems to leave a dent in the pitch. I’m not sure that would normally happen with just a ball flicked forward like that.
Was it a soft spot and did it add to the ball moving the slightest?
I guess it’s time to move on from this but I do feel for the lad. I guess he gave Donn a big grin though!
