There was lucky involved of course but the transfer strategy of getting young players in early for low fees and the style of football was outstanding to watch, even as a neutral. Of course everybody else starting doing the same, which made it more difficult to compete with mega spending clubs but for several years it was refreshing to watch, especially having watched United dominate for years.
Sounds like Souness has a personal dislike of Wenger as he didn't wanna have a whiskey with him after the game.
Souness always been a miserable caant so not surprised Wenger didnt want to have a drink with him.
That aside, not sure what luck has to do with Wenger targeting great young players.
Yeah, not a lot of merit behind most of it.
The back 5 was great, but also aging and missing a lot of games between them. His back 5 for the "Invincible" season was completely different - bar 10 token appearances for Keown.
Wrighty had 2 seasons with Wenger, and was largely phased out in the second.
Bergkamp was 26 when he came to Arsenal and 27 when Wenger got there, not really sure why Souness even mentioned his age as a factor.
As for the French bit, its not as if Wenger bought in Zidane, Desailly, Blanc etc. He got young and uncapped Vieira and Petit who was not in the French squad much. Even the next group were largely bit part players until Wenger got them.
And we all know the mitigating circumstances for the barren years after the stadium move.
the clown probably thinks he would have been just as successful if he was French
Souness is by far the worst pundit in football. Can’t believe this cuuuuunt is still being paid to give his opinions on football.
He's basically talksport but accidentally
Isn’t he employed by Talksport?
It seems to be in thing to incite Arsenal fans to get clicks and notoriety.
It’s also just a thing for Souness to be a complete moron.
“I’ve never spoke to him about football. He would never come into my office after a game, the only manager that never did."
Seems like a bit of unrequited love.
Yeah. The guy who signed Ali facking Dia thinks he's more of a football man than Wenger.
You can tell he's been bursting to say this for years, I don't think he's saying it for clicks.
I think what he is saying is generally accurate - Wenger was literally a genius attack coach, ahead of his time on nutrition & knew the high quality French players well - but he was terrible at defence and game management & relied on legacy players for that.
Once that legacy became totally diluted the attack was still really creative but the defensive frailties made challenging for the league title extremely difficult.
Wenger knew how to set up a defence, clearly. He just preferred to play attacking football. To his own detriment of course, but let's not pretend like he didnt know how to.

The Invincibles only conceded 26 and there was no decline post "legacy" defence and the new defence he built.
In 2006 we broke records for clean sheets in the CL with Senderos and Flamini in the back 4...

Yeah I’ve never understood this myth. Things obviously started to go south for Wenger in his latter years, but Arsenal had good defences in numerous teams under Wenger.
Especially from Arsenal fans.
And especially ones who call themselves "ItsAboutTheBackFour".

I'd, and imo only listen to Wenger before I'd Listen to GS, I have no hatred for him but AW Arsenal teams were both entertaining and more than decent defensively, each to their own but Graeme often sounds a sad bastirt with his opinions, he knows football and was a superb player but he does, and again imo only chat pash?
This is honestly the worst take I’ve ever heard. This morning and bitching belong in American sports. Proper hissy fit from old Graeme

The invincibles were NOT post-legacy, Martin Keown was the key - at that time he brought forward the values from Adams & Bould & despite not playing so much at the end those values remained due to him.
Those values WERE slowly diluted, but at that point Keown held it upright, it was only later that it was completely lost.
You do understand that when tactics weren't working on the field Adams used to change the formation without even informing Wenger ? That's how little involvement Wenger had in the defence from early on.
