I mentioned on the live thread last night, NI must be one of the biggest overachievers in Europe given the talent pool available to them. Fair play .

Since the end of Communism in eastern Europe & the last generation of players brought up in those countries, it's a shame how poor the likes of Bulgaria & Romania have become

fancy getting battered by N Ireland

Funnily enough I specified Europe as someone mentioned Uruguay last night.

N Ire are reigning British Home Championships holders - have been for 20 years

It's also been pointed out that very few foreign managers (I think one) has won the WCs or Euros - I think that is more to do with the fact that the major teams have tended not to go 'foreign' for their managers, so I wouldn't necessarily use that as a negative.

……….

Greece won the euros with a German manager …..only time a tournament has been won with a foreign manager

The reality is the sided that usually win tournaments have plenty of home grown managers to pick from and have the best players.

Management seems to be about getting the best group together and getting them organised enough to go play.

Spain for example had a top squad bar the centre forward and it showed. One manager might not have played wingers and might have passed teams to death but the manager they did have used the two wingers and gave us some good games as well as passing us to death. Spain still have foreign managers in la liga at the very top but there's a lot of coaching options

England's problem is thst tjr leavue is flooded with foreign coaches even at the rubbish clubs so there's very very few options to look at and with respect (very little of it too) the likes of Potter and howe and Southgate are not up to it.

England never look right as a footballing team under Southgate. The ultra negative tournament football stuff can go so far when you have loads of players but someone will better you at some point once the better teams go through.

In 2010 homegrown rule came in for players. Since then England have loads and loads and loads of playing options come through.

There is no English coaching quota. No managers really backed so you are looking at a very very thin pool

The Copa America has been won by non-nationals on several occasions.

Why do we still act as if it didn't exist when it has a much richer tradition than the Euros, and South America has provided 10 out of 22 World Cup-winning sides?
