He went for money and guaranteed game time. We were moving on and his chances of starting were lessened. He was also hitting 30 so not his prime.
Worked out for him, he went to France98 and won the first division.
Worked out for us, we did the double.
not really, he was offered more money at Boro, the money he was on at Boro was equal or higher than the highest earners at Arsenal.
Being a Chelsea fan I also think that he didnt love arsenal as much as the fans loved him. And given throughout his career he often moved for personal reasons rather than upping his level or looking at honours. Maybe he just wanted out of Arsenal and Boro where miles ahead of other clubs in terms of what they would offer?

I think its apt that a substance abuser and gambling addict should be the voice of Arsenal on TV

This makes no sense as Merson is a Chelsea fan. Also we have other ex players in the media such as Wright, Keown and Dixon and none of these have ever been accused of being substance abusers.
Whats wrong exactly with overcoming substance and gambling addiction? pretty pathetic from some of you

people who quit gambling are just $hite at it
Merson was shown the door by Wenger/Dein. There was a huge problem with 'addiction' in the dressing room that needed to be sorted out. Those who faced it head on like Adams stayed. I think he still harbours some resentment towards Arsenal if you listen to him closely.

Low balled.
In line with the rest of the squad.
Best way to get rid of players who the fans would get angsty about.

proper low balled, played in just about every single game the season prior and the new contract he was offered was not inline with other players of equal standing in the squad. Middlesboro offered him the deal that he should have gotten at Arsenal (in line with the other players of the same importance with the Gunners)
Merson was not a proper winger, not a no.10, not a no.8. Look at the players we were attracting at the time, Dennis, Overmars, Davids etc. He was just not at that level. I compare ESR to him a lot. Add the extra baggage, and it was the right time to push him out.
Merson may not be the brightest individual academically, but his persistence in battling addiction and his desire to continue his career are to be applauded imo.
A career in the public eye, battling addiction, is worth of praise.
Fair enough to say he battled his demons and came through. But he was the one who put himself in that position in the first place and frankly didn't achieve to his full potential. Like Gazza wasted talent.

Of course. And his earnings and fame are arguably what gave him the platform for recovering and moving on with his life.
I still think it’s worthy of praise though, as it could very easily have gone the other way. Particularly given that Merson played in an era with a lot of less support for this type of thing.
I can hardly understand a word he says and what I can understand is usually bollox.
I doubt he would get so much work if he didn't have his addictions and a strong support team.
He’s still a moron, like that other waste of skin Ruddock
