Progress for a team that supposedly cannot defend
How long have you been waiting for this to reflect positively before posting it?
Thankfully we've managed to turn the form around a bit. Although the Brighton game was a worry we can only hope that is going to be a blip in an otherwise good run of form that will extend to the City game. If we don't lose to Villa, then I'll be more convinced we're on the right track, since when did we last not lose to a top team under Ange? Probably when we last played Villa.
What you can safely say regarding this season, compared to the way last season ended, is that performances have been much better. Coventry game was a stinker, Brighton 2nd half too and a few other moments aside, we have been pretty good and apart from the Arsenal game, should have been unbeaten.
Post again after 19 games 👍🏻

I read an article today comparing games and that's what made me think about it.
But looking at events, we were -2 points off last season until we beat United, then we were level pegging and then beating WHU put us 3 ahead, so we're only really ahead of last seasons curve since the weekend....that said our losses have been "better". NUFC Arsenal and BHA played us off the park last season and this season we lost all 3 again but really should have taken a minimum of 4 points from our performances.
We’ve been somewhat unlucky this season already, how we didn’t beat Leicester I will never know and we had 20 (twenty) shots at SJP and somehow lost 2-1.
The Arsenal game - they just defend better than we do and if we’re in our not taking our chances mode they will beat us.
Brighton was a bad loss, but we had won 5 on the bounce so you just have to accept it.
The main thing is we’re taking the cups seriously currently and that’s what I wanted the most - so quite happy so far
We lost 4-2 to Brighton last season. 3-2 this. Obvious progress.
Fingers crossed we can snatch a 2-2 draw in 11 months

Spurs thumped Villa 4-0 the last time they met. Would be very surprised if Spurs don't beat them pretty comfortably again. I don't rate them at all. Fair play they got top four, and they have started OK this season. But expect Spurs finish above them this season.
I agree there's no way Spurs finish below Villa this season.
The are greenshoots like Ange is adapting before dying.
As an example one of the midfielders Biss or Bentancur usually sit more than last season, set pieces the stats show we are better and taking Maddison off to shore up the balance in midfield (far too attacking) was intriguing having done nothing against Brighton and be tactically ouclasssed again.
That being said i watch us and there is nothing about us. I feel resigned to it, i feel a better coach gets better results. If you look across his reign there are more embarrasing losses than powerful wins.
As it stands we finish below Brighton/ Villa and there is not a chance that we win a cup with Ange. You do not win a cup with feast or famine football and you have to have tactical nouse which he does not sadly.
Well, we should beat Palace?
I’m going to be the pedant on the article and tell the OP that last year we beat Brentford 3-2 and Burnley 5-2.

There were plenty of embarrassing losses under all the previous managers, including Poch, so not sure Ange us any different. Also Spurs now look to be on an upward trajectory and come May would be astonished if the current Spurs squad finished behind either Villa or Brighton. Winning a cup is another challenge, who really knows how that will go, you need a bit of luck with draws.
Progress is Top 4 and/or a Trophy.

Villa have started ok? They've lost once in the Prem. They're top of the Champions League group. What constitutes as a good start for you?!
It`s pointless comparing game for game, season on season, the teams are not the same and the games are not played at the same time / under the same set of variables (such as injury, suspensions, rest between games, which referee you have, etc etc)
You can also not legislate for random individual errors, which have cost us results at Newcastle and Brighton. But overall the performances have been fairly good and we deserve more points than we have.
It`s all a bit up and down and the moment and who knows how it will all pan out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
But its a decent benchmark, if you are looking at improving on last season.
You can pick through 23/24 results and think that against some teams we should expect us to get better results, and some you might say that some were good results and may be better than expected.
In terms of the latter, there were not many, if any victories that you would say were stand out and hard to repeat this year. Beating Utd, Liverpool, NUFC at home, drawing at Arsenal, winning at Villa. Really they are the stand out results and we would hope and almost expect much the same this season.
There were plenty of poor results which we would hope and may be expect to better this season:
Home losses - Chelsea, Wolves, West Ham , Villa.
Away losses - BHA Fulham Wolves
That's 7 games where we should hope to make big improvements, where we got zero points last season. For me it should be at least another 10 points from these.
You can also look at the promoted teams. Last season, 6 wins from 6. Already 2 dropped points this season.
On the margins of expectation, draws at City & Arsenal, win at Villa may be hard to repeat but home losses to them could be turned into draws if we are looking for legit progress. Already not achieved vs Arsenal.
For me, this sort of analysis helps you target areas/games where we under performed last season so by comparing with this seasons results, the trend can be seen. I know teams are different year on year and form ebbs and flows but, for example, we should never be losing home and away to Wolves, 1 point from WHU, so can readily target games like this where we can expect better results IF we are an improving team.
So far we have done better in 2 games, worse in 1 and matched the other 5.
At this stage of the season, its more relevant than looking at the table because that gives no context.

Its not a theory. Its an incomplete means of assessing our progress compared to last season.
Regardless of our rest vs Palace last season, this is the sort of game we should be expecting to win and have the quality to win.
Whether we do or not informs whether we feel we have progressed at all. If we lost then we'd be on the same points from the same games so you could argue we are currently no better than last season

Should be beating Palace on form. In fact with Villa and Ipswich at home to follow, a real chance to climb in or near the top four. Hopefully lessons were learned from the Brighton match.

I do not quite see it, yes we are pleasing to the eye but we are lucky too Palace next a team that are completely downbeat at the minute. As were West Ham down on their luck too.
There is no control in our game which is why we will have the topsy turvey results and that will continue all season. We would also need leicester levels of luck to win a trophy under Ange.
As soon as we play a top six/eight side we lose. Newcastle, Brighton, Arsenal.
