O'Neil's Future?

C for me.

posted 2 weeks, 6 days ago

These are the arrivals from the summer transfer window and just how many have we seen on the pitch?

Andre €22.00m
Rodrigo Gomes. €15.00m
Sam Johnstone. €11.90m
Pedro Lima. €10.00m
Tommy Doyle. €5.00m
Bastien Meupiyou. €5.00m
Jørgen Strand Larsen. Loan fee: €3.00m
Carlos Forbs. Loan fee: €2.50m

Larsen is the only one who has had the most game time. Granted some are 18, but Meupiyou came with an injury and others have hardly featured much.

Our problems started after the Cup defeat against Coventry and I'm afraid GON has done nothing to convince me he's the right man for the job. 1 win against a relegated side Luton is the only one in 20 league games.

For me, it's time for GON to go if we don't beat Southampton.

you'd be fools to get rid. He needs backing not sacking.

There are some winnable games in the run up to Christmas for sure, I would give him until the end of November latest and see if there's any sign that he's getting us organised enough to stay up. It could be game by game for him now though.

Shi and Hobbs have painted themselves in to a corner by giving him a 4 year contract and publicly backing him as they did a few weeks ago. They'll want to give him as long as they can and will justify their decisions by sticking to the mantra about injuries at the end of last season and fixtures at the start of this. They'll argue that he deserves a run of games where he has a close to full squad and against teams not in the top 8.

The other question of course, who would come in and work under Shi and Fosun if the meek and compliant O'Neil is asked to leave?

Find it hard to believe he keeps his job if we fail to beat Southampton and even if we do beat Southampton I don't see how that suddenly makes him the man for the job. Would think at this stage he is always going to be only a game or two from the push unless we REALLY turn things around.

I remember Tam and I being quite outspoken about how poor we felt he may be and getting shouted down on here, primarily by Wolfie. He won us over for a spell but I guess the initial thoughts were pretty spot on after all.

I think GON still has some potential in the future but the massive red flag is he cannot set up a defence, his defensive record in 3 prem seasons is abysmal and I don't think I have ever seen a team quite so fragile with ANY ball into the box before.

Although GON deserves his share of criticism, we have owners that have consistently weakened the starting eleven over the last three summers now.

Each summer we have sold our club captain, and we are now without any on pitch leadership worthy of the name.

I still maintain that we haven’t got a centre back good enough to be anywhere near a PL starting eleven, it doesn’t matter how GON tries to set us up. The personnel aren’t up the the task. This is why Semedo and RAN look so poor as full backs.

Although O’Neill will take the blame, this mess is 100% on Fosun. Have they got another £120m to get us out of it in January?

This is exactly how i perceive from the outside. The list of players sold is mad - Neto, Kilman, Podence, Neves, Nunes, Collins, Coady, Jiminez, Traore.

All in the last 2 summers and most of them either are or are very capable of playing at a good premier league standard. Net spend of about +£100m

That's gonna handicap any club and any manager unless your recruitment is absolutely spot on.

Thanks for the mention...again. I am fully supportive of any manager, when he first comes in. However, there comes a time when, like at present, things don't seem to be getting better and results are the one thing that determines the fate of any manager,

Only a single win in 20 league games is a sign that he may well be out of his depth and a fresh face needed to kick start our campaign. Leaving it until Xmas may be too late. The stats are telling us, that any club in our position at this stage of the season, with the amount of points we've got, generally get relegated.

posted 2 weeks, 5 days ago

Just like to add that we we're very fortunate to get away with that last minute disallowed goal by Palace.

posted 2 weeks, 5 days ago

I think although weak that 'goal' is disallowed 95% of the time. Keepers just get protected far more than they should in those situations.

posted 2 weeks, 5 days ago

Bigger concern honestly would be who they bring in next. Zero confidence they would get it right. Edwards likely high on the list.

Wolves have played 7 of the top 8 teams + Newcastle.

That must be hands down the toughest set of fixtures in the league and the usual stats being bottom at this time in the season likely does not take account of such difficult fixtures

I don't think a manager whose side are 4th from bottom of the Championship should even be considered for the post should GON depart.

Dunno what this means, if anything at all.

(Bloomberg) -- Peak6 Investments has sold its minority stake in a holding company that operates Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to people familiar with the matter.

Fosun Sports Group recently bought back the shares held by the Chicago-based fintech firm for about $50 million, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the information is private. Peak6’s exit came about three years after it acquired the stake in the Fosun International Ltd.’s unit.

Interesting development, can't remember what the size of their minority stake was. Guess this could be Fosun consolidating their interest so that they can sell a larger chunk to a new investor and still retain a strong controlling percentage themselves.

Or could be so that they can flog the lot. Our current predicament could actually be an advantage as it may encourage investors to approach Fosun with silly offers. All depends whether they want to take a low price now or hold out and risk relegation and a potential loss on the investment.

posted 2 weeks, 4 days ago

Problem with minority interests in a club is how much do Fosun give them a say in how the club is run. Suspect Fosun are happy to take the cash but not give up much of their control. A new investor will want to know how their investment will be used and also have a say in the way the club operates. Not sure Fosun would be a caring sharing partner

As for GON I think the club will come under enormous pressure if we were to not beat Southampton and stick with him. The international break that follows looks like an ideal time for a change. If we don’t bite the bullet then, we would probably be sticking through to Xmas and the danger then would be making a change too late to save our skins.

As for a replacement then Moyes is the name that keeps cropping up. Give him a 6 month contract to keep us up which he probably would. Trouble is I have no doubt he would demand a 3 year contract and his uninspiring brand of football doesn’t appeal to me. Potter may be better and it was him that set Brighton on the way to becoming a decent top flight club before becoming one of many that thought Chelsea was an attractive alternative when it wasn’t. Would love us to find an up and coming Continental manager but then we do need someone who can land running.

Maybe Mendes could find the right answer. He did with Nuno and with the players he helped bring in during that era. Since we stepped back from using Jorge our dealings have been far from good and that has been a key factor in us ending up in this mess.

and have since sold Neto and Kilman for £100m and brought in no marks for a fraction of the cost.

GON did an amazing job in the circumstances last season and this season his hand has been further weakened. Your ire should be at the board, not the manager.

posted 2 weeks, 4 days ago

There’s plenty of ire with the board and if I had millions
to buy them out I would

But Wolves still have a decent squad and GON should be doing better than one win in 20 and no wins this season. Injury problems last season, tough fixture list this season, tough calls from VAR. All good excuses but we still shouldn’t be bottom
