Amorim 343

We will need to wait for Bruno and Garnacho. Some hints are being shown though. Pacier, stringer defenders. Mainoo and Yoro being back might be a godsend for him.

I expect this team vs ipswich

Lindelof De Ligt Martinez
Dalot Casemiro Ugarte Mazraoui
Bruno Hojlund Rashford

Think this formation suits Rashford the best as he doesn't have to chase back much and can stay central

Not that I don't detect your sarcasm, but LWB seems like his best chance of any game time.

I've read that Amorim likes a lot of running in two his midfielders ahead of the central defence, so Ugarte seems certain to be a first choice selection. Mainoo isn't exactly a hard running, cover-every-blade-of-grass player (and trying to make him that would detract from what he's great at) but has superior mobility to Casemiro so I guess he is likely to be the first-choice partner.

The centre forward role is more about running the channels and less about hold-up play and receiving the ball back to goal compared to Ten Hag's football, which means it ought to suit Rashford as well as Hojlund.

If you watch Gyokeres, he's very, very mobile. As well as running the channels, he's backwards and forwards across the defensive line all game, rotating with the two tens, and making pockets of space for the CMs to run into. It's much more of a role for Hojlund, IMO. (In fact, I've seen several analysts compare Hojlund and Gyokeres' attributes quite favourably, and I tend to agree.)

Personally, I still don't see where Rashford fits in in the 3-4-2-1. Maybe he'll get chances both at number nine and in one of the WB roles; but I can't see him at ten, and if he doesn't demonstrate that he can play one of the former roles, I can see him gone in the summer.

Best guess against Ipswich is:

Lof De Ligt* Martinez*
Mazraoui Casemiro Ugarte* Dalot
Amad* Hojlund* Bruno*

The players with *s I'd put (a very small amount of) money on. The others I'm really not sure about, although I'd be very surprised if he threw in players who aren't fully match fit/recovered from injury.

Particularly hard to guess the wingbacks, but I expect he'll be cautious.

I do think he has some attributes that would make for a good WB, energy and tenacity being two.

"I've read that Amorim likes a lot of running in two his midfielders ahead of the central defence..."

He likes a lot of running in all of his players but yes, partuclarly the WBs and CMs. His CMs (since Palhinha left, at least) have both been box to box players.

Rosso, I'll defer to your superior knowledge. With regard to the number 9 slot, would you agree that Zirkzee looks a worse fit than Rashford for the role Amorim envisages? I find Zirkzee a really interesting player and was glad we bought him, but he looks to me like he could be a casualty of the demands the new system place on the squad. Especially as he's still pretty bankable if sold back to Italy.

Do you see Mainoo as a comfortable fit? (I ask this as someone who is as invested in Mainoo realising his talent as I am in United getting good.)

There's a nice article on the Athletic today about Amorim's management, demeanour, etc. Adds a bit of depth to the picture we already have of a coach who excels at man management through treating players as human beings, really getting to know them, and communicating very clearly about what he wants from them. There's also emphasis on giving players freedom to go out and play their football, contrasting with the more prescriptive managers. Supposedly he doesn't go in for histrionics on the touchline (which may upset the 'must show passion' contingent) and he prefers to equip the players with knowledge about solutions to problems in training rather than issuing too many instructions during a match. After a defeat he doesn't scream and swear, but his mum knows not to call him until the next day.

It also mentioned that while he sticks to the 3-4-3, that shouldn't be mistaken for tactical rigidity, as there is scope for interpreting that in different ways, e.g. more proactive or reactive, and with different blends of players.

Re. Zirkzee, I'm really not sure. Amorim seems to like 'proper' nines. Gyokeres and Paulinho are big, strong, hardworking, pacey (enough) guys, who don't mind a bit of a wrestle or flinging elbows around. Harder (who may eventually replace Gyokeres) is similar. Hojlund fits that profile. Rashford and Zirkzee don't really. *If Amorim sticks to his template*, I could see both of the latter leaving in the summer.

Re. Mainoo: I don't think he's an immediately obvious choice for an Amorim CM; but he'll recognise the lad's prodigious talents and will want to leverage those. He loves working with youngsters and will no doubt believe that he can make one hell of a player out of Kobbie. He's going to have to run a bit more though

"It also mentioned that while he sticks to the 3-4-3, that shouldn't be mistaken for tactical rigidity, as there is scope for interpreting that in different ways, e.g. more proactive or reactive, and with different blends of players."

Absolutely. See the recent City and Braga games. Same 3-4-2-1. Very different approaches.

He's also experimented quite a bit with how he's used his CBs and the roles of the tens/WBs in particular. I cannot stress how important the relationships between the tens and their respective WBs are for his system, btw. I think this is one thing he's going to struggle with until he's got settled, first choice RWB and LWB.

He's had plenty of games where he has played really well. The biggest issue with Lindelof is that he only plays well if the circumstances suit his strengths and don't expose his weaknesses, and that hasn't been the case often enough.

Well he can go and play well somewhere else where the circumstances suit his strengths and don’t expose his weaknesses because he’s one of the worst CB’s I can ever remember playing for this club

That first goal is instructive. We’re going to see a lot of that: diagonal from one of the wide CBs to the opposite WB sat right on the touchline; one touch combos with the ten to get to the byline; pull back towards the penalty spot.
