My issue with X is not so much the echo chamber thing (i dont think it is one, tbf), but that Musk basically uses it as a tool to knowingly and willingly amplifies lies and misinformation. There isn't some great honour in promoting 'free speech', when said speech is demonstrably false (and not through ignorance, but through malicious intent).
Yeah, bluesky might become a bit of an echochamber. But X has genuinely become downright depressing and I don't blame people one bit for wanting to get away from it.

Being in a left wing echo chamber is very dangerous. If I am gay or black and in this echo chamber then I might become deluded and think that the way I am is acceptable. We need alternative views telling us that it's not ok to be this way, for balance.

I’m on it. The algorithms look pretty good so far.
On the op, most of the time social media being echo chambers or not is the choice of the user - a lot do want to just have that. That’s exactly where Musk ruined it.

That's not the case. For the average user it is not their choice. The algorithms feed them stuff based on what they post or view. Making platforms an echo chamber is the business model for most social media sites.
It's like saying advertising is completely ineffective because people make their own choices.

So the algorithms when working are giving people more of what they choose to look at or post so that entirely is the users choice. I didn’t say it wasn’t effective, it’s the complete opposite and show why advertising is effective.
Where Musk changed it was the algorithm completely changed the for you bit so it wasn’t based purely on what the user was looking at so was completely ruined.

Originally, yes, absolutely. If you choose to never seek an alternative viewpoint then it won’t give it to you as it assumes you don’t want to see it. The algorithms when working feed on your own behaviour, just like advertisers do. That was my point.
I made a deliberate action when I joined Twitter a long time ago following a few news channels I deemed as not conflating news with political opinion then a few political journalists on both sides of the spectrum and my feed for years had both sides for different arguments. Had I just followed right or left wing journalists, I’d have expected it to purely give me feeds of people with similar views.
When Musk took over, not only did the algorithm give me me way more from one side than the other, it hugely increased the political posts despite that not being my main interest, either by followed accounts or ones I engaged with.
I’m highlighting politics there as the algorithm does seem to still work on X in other areas….
It seems like the opposite of choosing what you see?
It’s exactly what you chose you wanted to see in the first place.
You can still do it manually in terms of just using the following tab but then that’s entirely what you’ve decided to see, you’re not using any algorithms at all.
