Actually scrap my first paragraph there, it doesn’t work in that analogy thinking about it! It’s close though, just needs some tweaking.

The majority of people don't have the intelligence or self awareness to get out of the viscous spiral that social media algorithms take them down. Social media platforms therefore need to take more responsibility rather than your suggestion that it was the person's choice to take up smoking so nothing should be done about it because it was their choice in the first place to start smoking.

I’m on it. The algorithms look pretty good so far.
On the op, most of the time social media being echo chambers or not is the choice of the user - a lot do want to just have that. That’s exactly where Musk ruined it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Musk’s trying to turn it into 8chan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you catch ‘Q: Into the Storm’ or otherwise read much about the history of 8chan, Dazza?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I knew a bit about it, but watched Q: Into the Storm a few years ago, which was a real eye opener.
Anyone that cries about the suppression of free speech should really watch that documentary series.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, that was scary shiiiit. Absolutely by Nazzis, for Nazzis, and piggybacked on by Trump.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s telling that even Frederick Brennan thought it was too much.

That wasn’t my suggestion. That’s a different argument entirely as that’s the blurring of facts and opinion and where regulation should come in, something again Musk has ruined with X as he sees it as being able to be entirely self regulated.
The two have been increasingly blurred but there is stil the ability to regulate against incorrect facts, that’s been done already, how can you ever do that against opinion?
If you’re just saying there should be more regulation around misinformation then I agree wholeheartedly.

Why does everything have to be politicised these days?
The things I use twitter or any alternative for are not all about politics... I follow musicians/bands, I find out about events near me, i read a joke by a comedian etc etc
If Bluesky ends up being a better place to do that, i'll move there.

thats gotta to be better than racists, Trumpoids and the like and thier opinions, that you get on X. Isn't it?

Never had a Twitter account but fully aware it’s turning to sh-t since Elon bought it. Because I don’t have an account I don’t browse it, instead find links externally (mainly from Reddit) that lead me directly to the post I want to see. In that way it works fine for my needs.

It really doesn't matter whether the platforms are right or left it's laughable to think we need a balance of both like somehow that serves some purpose. The folk on there already have their positions entrenched and it's just lots of ppl shouting at each other. It's a complete sh*tshow. Utterly pointless except to brainwash the next poor stupid fool who happens to chance upon it and believe the cr4p they read.
Anything other than politics and shallow influencer sh*te, then social media is generally ok, but other than that stick to the real world.

Twitter started out as a left wing echo chamber and has gradually become more and more right wing over the years. Right wing people are always late to the party but make a loud entrance when they do arrive.

It’s interesting how Trump’s ban from Twitter (now X) ended up sparking a wave of new social media platforms. He was the unlikely catalyst for diversification. Now, there’s a space for pretty much every political ideology. But does this lead to better debate and greater engagement, or is it just creating more echo chambers?
X under Musk feels like a mess, full of hate and controversy, thanks to algorithms designed to thrive on drama in particular misinformation. Musk himself has been at the centre of some unsavoury moments by perpetuating misinformation, especially during the UK riots, when someone with so much influence and power should be fostering peace and harmony. It’s no wonder so many people are leaving the platform.
Bluesky, on the other hand, feels like old school Twitter, simpler and less toxic - for now! But at present, there’s barely anyone notable using it, so it’s hard to say what its future looks like.

If normal people leave twitter then the free speech fighters won't have a cause anymore. So there would be nothing left to do other than turn on eachother. I'm sure there's a South Park episode on this kind of thing.

Easy solution.
Full names only permitted on all social media platforms which has to be checked and authenticated. Same thing with your picture. Passport style photo which is authenticated with online photo capture software.
Won't get rid of all the hate but it will get rid of 95% of it literally overnight.
It won't happen though as these huge tech companies won't make as much money.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good luck in the uk where people are getting arrested for talking lol I don’t think you’d have many subscribers
