It might be a north/south thing actually. My mum's mum had the most cut class voice I've ever heard, and she said scon. Her family were all north/midlands/scotland though.
Either way, scone sounds ridiculously pretentious to my ear.

A scon is lighter than a scown you see. That's the point. That's why you don't put on weight if you eat a scon rather than the more pretentious and therefore fattening scown.
