The word Woke has been weaponised so that racists can justify their drivel. It's true meaning has been lost to many. I think that's what people find annoying.
There was no wide outrage at what Bents said, despite you thinking there was. What he said was wrong, which he admitted, but to say "The Woke Brigade" were up in arms is simply inaccurate. The ban imposed was harsh but I think it was meant to be a message to people who use terms like Woke Brigade, that sometimes you just need to be a bit more mindful when shooting your mouth off. It doesn't mean you can't have an opinion but just accept that someone, somewhere may not like it.

The Americans characterise us Brits as having bad teeth. Comedy like Austin Powers sends up this stereo-type. The Brits mock the Scots for eating deep fried mars bars and being tight fiiisted with money.
But if you called said "typical tight fiiisted Jew" or sang a song about a Korean player eating dogs (Park at Utd had one like this), then its causing offence to a nation.
The nuance and intent of what people are saying is now ignored and just shoved in the Racist bracket.
Not defending Bentancur here, just challenging how such minor situations should be properly assessed in the interest of keeping the severity of such issues and the punishment in perspective. For me a very harsh zero tolerance will only promote a reaction against it.

I think a lot of it is hierarchical. English, Scots, Americans live culturally in the same sphere with the same privileges. Using those same Austin Powers style jokes about black people, for example, is unacceptable because, not only is it deeply offensive, it carries the weight of centuries of persecution and abuses with it.
Technically you could argue that the pure physical characteristics of an Asian person, specifically South-East Asian, are more narrow than those in Europe. There are no natural blue-eyed blondes in Asia so there are legitimate grounds for that kind of truth-telling. That said, you know that it's deemed offensive. You know it's a lazy steroetype, so maybe don't say it. It's a bit like the P-word. That, in and of itself, should not be offensive, just as 'Brit' isn't. The problem is that the word has been hijacked by those looking to deeply offend so its association with racism is intrinsically linked.
I think rather than focus on why it offends, the focus should be on the fact that it DOES offend, and therefore shouldn't be fought against. As a white European, why should I have any right over deciding what is and isn't offensive to those from ethnic minorities. If I did then we'd be perpetuating the same racist tropes over and over again.
I'm with Automatic on this. People might think he's overreacting but fundamentally, for a more progressive society, he's right. We can't let lazy racist stereotypes slide, even if they're not meant with initial offence. That's what makes this country a better place to live, frankly.
I was angry with the ban initially but I've come to realise that whilst it's harsh, it's not something that should be fought against. You just have to take your medicine and accept it as a learning curve.
