It's always going to be a terrible comparison. Pep is in my opinion arguably the better manager when managing a club with the best side/biggest budget but he's never won against the odds as Ferguson or other great managers have.

It's not exactly a slight on Pep, it's just a reality that due to his circumstances he didn't need to. For me I'll not remember his City or Bayern sides. I'll remember his Barca side but who wouldn't with players like Messi, Xabi, Iniesta etc and even then they lost a bit of flair towards the end of his reign.

He's changed football management though, potentially more so than Ferguson whose skills seem to be mentality based rather than tactical, although there's plenty of crossover no doubt.

I'd rank Ferguson significantly above Pep for the time being but at their peaks, Peps best sides would comfortably best Ferguson's even accounting for the changes in football. Even United's treble was a swashbuckling affair with plenty of close calls, the semi in the FA Cup and obviously the CL final were won on the most iconic of unlikely monents. Peps teams have often felt so far above their peers it's barely surprising when they achieve what should feel remarkable.

People have short memories. There were periods he was in trouble too. City will probably recover and finish top 4 and that won't look so bad as it looks now. Fergie once went what? 3 years without a league title and there was even talk of the sack from some quarters during that period.

The argument is that Pep spends his way to success, which is true. However, this must be weighed against he fact that managers used to get a lot of time to set up when Fergie started at United. You wouldn't get 6 years to set up in modern football. Fergie was almost sacked by United.

So managers must spend more these days, and why not? Their time is very limited if they don't get instant success. You may as well splash the cash.
