it may be a better squad and team than this time last year but I don't think its a patch on the squad Rafa had which gave United a run for their money.

Well no, as Rafa had two seasons of spending big which pushed us back up and then seasons of no spending which put us back down. Now we have spent 30m and went up a little. It is quite simple really. The problem now is when teams like Chelsea have come and just spend big amounts at one go then, it is only a matter of time before they go above you. It was Arsenal and Man United, now it's Man United, Chelsea and Man City with Spurs and Arsenal also challenging Liverpool for a top four place. So unfortunately to improve your squad beyond that of the others then you need to spend, which is what Liverpool have and what Arsenal are this season finding out.

United haven't spent big in years.

Well they had a much higer starting point. Also I'm sure you'll agree that in the past couple of years you have slowly declined. It might not show on the trophy count but it does show on the pitch. You aren;t as good as you were when you were spending big. You'll have to start spending big again from next season as City will improve their already expensive squad.
