And you should always know when the time is right to retire.
To may people keep playing for their country when they are to old.

Why? How old was Shearer when he retired?
It should be up to the national manager to decide who's ready to play.

Far too young. Those dang Newcastle people forced him to do it.

So, you think that the manager of a National team should tell a player when he can or can not retire?
Good luck with that idea.
Completely forgot about that article. Sorry.

Are you intentionally misunderstanding? I'm saying it's up to the manager to decide if you're good enough to still play, you should never make yourself unavailable to your national team until you decide to quit playing completely.
"Far too young. Those dang Newcastle people forced him to do it."
It was probably the smartest thing he ever did. Added more goals and years to career and helped the club who was paying him after all. If Shearer did not retire when he did Newcastle probably would not have even played in the Champions League under Bobby Robson.
But at the expense of the national side as well. He could easily have played for both - don't tell me professional footballers are incapable of playing a few extra international games each season.

shearer retiring early from internationals he said was the best thing he ever did as he was able to get treatment and rest on his knee which he wouldn't have ever got otherwise.
That is what my issue is about. It shouldn't be up to a player when they can stop playing for their country - it should be a matter of pride to be called up for their country and so deciding you're not going to anymore - especially when you still have a good few years left in your career - is wrong.
My issue with Utd players doing it is that they seem to do it more often than any other club in the country. You still see plenty of people saying they'll never say no to their country but not most Utd players. It must be something Ferguson says to them.

Of course he would have been able to get treatment - he didn't need to retire.
neville didn't retire did he?
He didn't. But he didn't play for Man Utd.
