Iwrin has to be in it, simply the best full back the premier league has ever had....on either side, and boy he couldn't half take a free kick! But Adams was the best central defender.

Desailly
Vidic
Stam
Carvalho
Alex
Neville (G)
Irwin
Woodgate

Have all been hugely under-rated as defenders in their relevant EPL eras.

A Cole
Campbell
Carragher
Bruce
Terry

Have all been hugely over-rated respectively

year upon year of solid defending !!

Sami Hypia was so underrated in my opinion, whenever Liverpool were struggling they would stick Carragher at full back, Sami would come in and sort out the defence and Liverpool (generally) got back on track, top player

Des Walker and Paul McGrath were top quality defenders, although maybe their best was pre-Premiership.

I would say those two, Tony Adams, Marcel Desailly and Rio Ferdinand.

Paul McGrath, great shout there mate, i think he won the player of the year in '92/93, how good could he have been if he'd been able to train and wasn't hungover every saturday?

when houllier was in charge of liverpool, he had a great record against arsenal and hyypia was one of the reasons why. even though we always outperformed them in terms of league positions, whenever we played liverpool we struggled to even score goals against them because hyypia was unbeatable at the back. and his partnership with henchoz was frighteningly good.

No, but that doesn't mean he wasn't one of the top 5 defenders in PL history...

if what we saw in the premiership counts as decline then i would have hated facing him at his peak.

posted on 28/10/11

Well it would be the one that played in the premeirship that we base this on not what he was previously.. In Italy I assume..

You misunderstand. Desailly was not at his peak when he came to England but he was still one of the best CBs to have played in the PL.

....In your opinion...

posted on 28/10/11

I think it an opinion held by many.
Your opinion seems very limited to Man Utd and Arsenal players of the last 10 years.

posted on 28/10/11

Theres a reason why they won so much.... and looking back over the lists his name is certainly not universal in them...

posted on 28/10/11

Looking back at the lists you see a lot of people with very limited range.
Unless I am much mistaken the Premier League started in 93, not 2003 as the lists in the main seem to suggest.

When I said it is an opinion held by many I was referring to those outside JA606 as much as the posters on here.
He maybe won't be in every ones top 5, but to suggest, as you seem to be, that he was over the hill and poor in the Premier League, is very much mistaken.

If we're counting "the best defenders ever to play in the Premiership" then you're gonna have to put Larry White in. He was bobbins when he came to United, but before then... what a player!

Colin Hendry, Jaap Stam, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Ryan Nelsen

posted on 28/10/11

DJeezus all I asked was "was he at his peak when he came to the premeirship" which just sugtgests he wasn't. I was by no means calling him rubbish if anything I was hinting that Desially at his peak was a possible entry on the list...

Ohh and in fairness over time the Premeirship has got alot better that is why later players could feature more often...

For example Pallister and Bruce. Both great defenders for United but the ones who came after like Stam, Vidic and Rio are better...

Hendry is a good shout...

Actually, swap Nelsen for Desailly. It's a close call but Desailly was slightly better.

It was more your
...in your opinion...
comment that suggested I was completely wrong when I said "Desailly...he was still one of the best CBs to have played in the PL."

And yes, the Premier League has got better, but you judge players on when they played. Paul McGrath, I think, is one of only two defenders to have won the PFAs Players Player of the Year award in PL history, and as such certainly deserves a mention on that alone , even if you are not as old as me and cannot remember his excellence.
