HELP!

xboxes are no better.

do you know anyone good with electronics? if so, get them to strip it down and check the solder on the important chips. because lead solder is now banned from manufactured goods they have to use lower quality synthetic solders, and they fail over time (this is the same reason that roads fall apart, they're not allowed to use proper tar, and have to use envornmentally friendly cack that doesn't last)

thank you! i will try and get someone to strip it....
i'd do it myself but the screws on the front are not generic so i don't have the right tools.

i'll try and get some proper solder too!

thanks for your advice Zaphod, much appreciated.

I can't guarantee it will work, it may be a different fault, but if it's already dying then it's definitely worth a look.

yep certainly is worth looking at.

cheers!

How about trading it into computer x change or someplace like that whilst it still works and then paying £100 extra and buying a new one off them?

This seems to be quite a common problem, they seem to be dying slowly.

So glad I didn't buy one!

the only thing with that is they would be really sus if i wanted to exchange my working old ps3 for a new working one.

the other thing is they take your details so if they find it doesn't work they come and bite you on the bum!

tis another option though... cheers guys

You just say you want to buy the slim version. Unless you already have that then you are stuffed!

yep it is the slim version......

i could take it in, take the cash and then buy it elsewhere?!

buy some SHIN ETSU thermal paste
open up ur ps3
clean off the paste that is there, and replace it.
your chip might be too far gone, and would require reflowing.. basically the solder gets little cracks in it from excessive heat cycles and then fails eventually. cleaning out the thermal paste and replacing with better thermal paste might help
