You are having a laugh aren't you. £7M for an overrated defender who can't get into the England team and has 6 months left on a contract at a club with the worst defensive record in the league and still has the cheek to ask for £100K a week when he will simply be taking Alex's spot (a superior defender by the way) on the bench?
Yea. Bargain. WAKE UP WENGER!

United have plenty of CBs just really weird of us to have such a crisis over it this season. If we get Cahill, that would be 6CBs on our books.

he's just a decent defender nothing more nothing less, it's not like we missed out on Beckenbauer. We have 3 quality centre backs, it's the least of our worries.
Rio may not be first choice but he can still do a job. Who said Vidic wants out? And Evans isn't useless. unless we have Rio also go out for the season, having 4-5 CBs should be enough. We also have Fryers(sp?) who can come in and do a job.

Rio isn't 'gone' just yet. He can still do a job. Though I think he still needs a few games before he can get back into his stride. He doesn't play well with Jones at CB. Evans is decent. he is 4th/5th choice. I he would probably get into to most prem teams. the thing that frustrates me is he can be a really good defender at times but then he goes and makes a stupid mistake.
And Fryers can play CB or LB, young and coming through, may not be first team material just yet, but is on the edge of the team and still young. Time will tell if he turns out to be good or another phil bardsely.
I don't think we need Cahill. Not this season anyway. And if we were to get someone to replace Rio or to cover Vidic's injury, we would need someone better than Cahill.
Time will tell if he turns out to be good

True ... but ferdinand is finished, vidich wants out and that uniter bred one (not jones or smalling) is useless so he would have been a decent buy
=======================
Worry about your own team. When was the last time you won anything?
I'll reply to each segment piece by piece - Hanz Grooben (U6148)
"Evans is not decent ... i tried to be polite but lets face it if he was not from your academy you would chuck him as fast as most of your fan base seem to want him out."
- The fans also wanted shot of Fletcher until he came good (and played on will illness when she really shouldne't have). They also wanted shot of Carrick, Berba and I can go on. Rarely will SAF allow a player to stay if he wasn't good enough for United.
"Rio is just over it now... soon to follow will be evra* ... replace now or later it means little."
- Rio is not has good as he use to be, but he is still better than Cahill. He can still do a job and has played well when he has had a run in the side. Evra hasn't been defensively sound as he was a few years ago, but still a damn good player. If he could defend like he did a few years ago he would be back to his best. His attacking play has been superb this year, and he has improved from last season. Both will need replacing the question is, do we have the players already in the side or do we have to buy? I think the ones in the side will be given a chance unless something drastic happens.
"Never heard of fryers.... but smalling and jones are real quality ..... those brazilian twins are not to shabby either."
- The Brazillian twins are great when they are not injured. Smalling is better at CB than Jones at the moment and seems very able to replace Rio. You may not have heard of Fryers but he has made a few appearances for us. You've probably not heard of a few of our youth players, that itself doesn't mean they are cack. I've not heard of all the Arsenal youth players, etc. Doesn't mean I know who they are. Hell, I didn't even know who Jennings was.
"A mid twenties england international would have beed a good buy for you"
- then we will have 6CBs on our books. 5 if you take out Vidic who is injured for the season. When all bar Vidic are fit, who will the be the first choice CBs? I think Rio and Smalling (wih Jones playing in midfield). Cahill may do a job for us during the injury crisis but will he be anywhere near the first 11 when it is over?
And secondly, Cahill was sold by Villa (if i remember correctly). I have no idea if the fans of Villa rated him or not, but if managers and clubs followed everything the fans said or wanted, there would be no players produced by the academies in the top teams.

You just wasted your breath, mate. There's no point in talking sense to a buffoon.
Then this will be my last comment on this thread.
Cahill, no thanks. Good luck to him at Chelsea but United didnt need him...
Evans is decent. Better than the likes of koscielny
And when arsenal could have had him aswell ... where would we be now with out wilshere for half a year!
My advice to wenger and ferguson ... When a golden opportunity looks you in the mouth... take it.

That is what I am stating here on serveral occasions too.
Batmanu: Why do you think the guy is rubbish is beyond me. We were apparrently interested in Cahill before the season.
Yes we bought Mertesacker who turned out to be decent at least but as the OP said: We want to be at the top and a big team. Watch out at City. They bought also player who not necessarily play in every game but they can rotate whenever it is needed. Do we have the same luxury? I think not.
So let ne get this straight, we missed a trick by not signing a defender from the club with the worst defensive record in the league.
Jesus wept
ManUtd: Is that only Cahill's fault the mess Bolton are in? Think not. Imo Wenger shouldnt miss the opportunity to sign him up for only 7 mios. for the reasons I comment on this thread already.
Maybe he's good enough for Arsenal. He isn't good enough for Utd
Wenger and SAF don't usually get it wrong,if he was a top player the ywould have shown more interest. Cahill's a decent player but we've got at least four centre backs already at the club who are better than him in my opinion, i think Cahill is a good example of an english player being hyped up by the media, bit like the player he could potentially replace in the Chelsea team long term.
