HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION

Your initial hypothesis is wrong. rooney is not worth past 35 million, and that is only because he is english and there is a belief that you need an english foundation to do well. you could not get man city to trade silva for him, let alone the comical idea of messi being on the same level. let it be clear, not in the same echelon, these are perennial wfoty nominees, rooney struggles to get nominations for best player in england. removing that delusion is the start of a healthy mental state

secondly, why would you buy a lead striker? its were we are loaded in. berbatov for all his flair is considered useful only when he leads the line. welbeck has been a revelation and will only get better and hernandez is good as you can do with an impact sub. we will need a SS or a very good attacking midfielder. could care less to suggest options because i hate that formation, but the various options people cream for will certainly be enough at least just as good as rooney.

a play maker through midfield has not been essential for united for maybe 5 yrs now? unless we are going to change our style of football (something fergie has done a lot in 30 odd yrs of management right? em... no). a united midfielder has a mix of both creativity and firmness. a balanced midfielder will always fit any system and guess what? they are rarer than strikers, attacking midfielders and even wingers. think not? name 3 complete midfielders?

if rooney leaves (not happening, rooney is not that stupid. it would be worse than owen leaving liverpool it will be only downhill because his lack of technique will standout in any other team, luckily we focus on other things) we can get goetze, push nani through the middle or try and get in pastore, refurbish kaka or make a new rooney. tbh i dont know what we would do. all i know is we will survive.

Only city and possibly chelsea would pay that sort of fee for Rooney and I believe city would jump at the opportunity to sign him.

I agree that a top striker would be needed, we might be loaded with them but none of what we have are hardly top quality, welbeck and chico can get better and berb hasn't been on the bench for no reason.

Goetze often plays in the rooney position so would be an option and erikson looks tasty also. I see we have been linked with Hazard today, think he often plays wide but can play in the middle and everyone I hear speak about him says he is very special.

I think that would more than use the £65m!

Wrong!

Carroll went for 35 mil and i bet you wouldn't have thought that one day before the deal was done. Carroll is no Rooney and Rooney is no Messi but football is football and Rooney would / could go for 65 large...easy!

Rooney probably is worth around £40m realistically but would defintely go for around that £60m figure to an English club as he is the top English player, at a peak age and when compared to other recent transfers of english players with much less ability.

For all those who say that he isn't worth 65m let me tell you one thing that our team is completely dependent on him. He along with Ronaldo have led us to enormous success.
If Torres is worth 50m then he is worth 65m imo as Torres' game depends on pace and finishing while Wazza has a much better overall game.
I have never said he is as good as Messi or Ronaldo. That's why I said that I would straight away swap him for them or Iniesta as they are way better. But to suggest he isn't a world class player is madness. He would get into every team in the world.

Of course rooney isn't worth 65 million but you have to look at the market rate for a player, torres 50 million and carroll for 35 million tells us all we need to know about the ridiculous amounts of money clubs are willing to part with to land their player, rooney could easily, and i mean easily go for anything between 50 and 70 million.

If I was playing Football Manager, I would have saved before the Blackburn game and we'd be 3 points clear now.

Is torres worth 50 million? Is carroll worth 35 million? The answer is actually relative- it depends on the system. Rooney to us is worth 65 million probably but because we have taken 6 yrs to teach him our ethos and system. Based on pure skill set he is not more talented than a silva or aguero to be honest talentwise city have at least 5 players on equal or greater ability to me who with 2 yrs in our system will have us saying wayne who?

The question is what a buying team think he is worth? No top 2 spanish team will buy him, just not technical enough. Maybe malaga or psg. Ac milan? The only reason city will be interested in him is because it weakens us. Even then they paid for clearly better players at already inflated cost. Which is not close to the ridiculous 65 mill. Does not just make sense.
