But racism is completley different to calling someone fat. It's because of the history of black people and slaves. They used the n word to call them then, so now its seen offensive. Its like calling Germans Naz is, not nice.

Plus you will see alot of ppl not being favourec due to their race. If you are an asian or black you would understand it better.

50p, thanks for your thoughts, i see your reasoning but think you miss the point, the average white guy doesnt view black people as black people, just as people and the name calling only rears its head when there is a spat between the 2. so it wouldnt make any difference if they are fat or black, they would still get insulted in said spat.

id also like to add ...... i went to the martin luther king memorial museum in atlanta and it left me humbled and embarassed by the actions of the white people, but that was then and this is now, im certainly not like those people and dont even know anyone who is.

"the average white guy doesnt view black people as black people, just as people"

While this may be true for most, its not the case in many. You go into any busy pub in England, chances are someone will be ranting about some none white minority.
Fact of life. Until it isn't, authorities should come down on knuckle heads like a ton of bricks.

true prof, there are people like that but im sure it swings both ways, im sure there are blacks and asians who call white people by unsavoury names.
i think we are not too bad as a country on the whole and accept cultural differences better than most, it wouldnt bother me if my son or daughter married a black person or an asian, but i ask would their parents say the same..........

who knows, but you're being guilty of massively generalising two huge demographics. Some would care some wouldn't, same as with white parents.

Racism is relative to the society we live in. English people in Australia are Pommy Bar Stewards. Cockneys the world over are Spivvs or crooks. If you were to view the reactions of people in this country to types of people in the street you would see reactions according to what they were wearing. For instance meeting teens wearing hoodies. Or back on the racism root black guys with hoodies baseball caps talking funny English.

Or the reaction to Yorkies in Suffolk when they call a southern git soft.

all comments are reasoned and well thought out,
i think its good to debate such issues.
prof......i dont think im guilty of such at all really, i think religion plays a bigger part than racism, the majority of Cof E probably dont give a monkeys, catholics probably more so, asians probably would have more problems with it than most. i know lots of pakistanis that would marry a white girl but would be appalled at the thought of their sister marrying a white guy.
so its fair to say none of us are perfect but all in all the racism card does seem a tad lopsided.

Thing is the average white guy you'll see in your pub talking about blacks in a negative way which isn't intended as racism is true in other races.
you see black ppl talk about white ppl in same sense, but without intending to be racist. It's just how ppl see it.

personally i dont think colour makes the slightest difference, religion is a bigger divider.

can someone please put me straight on an issue cos im not sure whats correct.

the other week alan hansen was slaughtered for saying colourered ,IMO he was generalising ......blacks chinese mixed race........now im not sure of a correct term and dont understand the negativity towards hansen for it.......if he was talking about blacks then obviously he was in the wrong,

Brilliant. They're my favorite kind of racists, the ones that say "i'm not racist, but ... "

i just think we over react big time...... hansen said something which 20 years ago was acceptable.
lewis hamiltons comment about "is it cos im black" another one blown out of proportion.
weve gotta lighten up.

Kimmy-

I think you have a point. We are constantly walking on egg shells when referring to someone's ethnicity. Hanson used the word "coloured" not maliciously but should be aware that that word is derogatory. He should be saying "we had many black players in my day" People are genuinely confused around political correctness and unintentionally make blunders. There is no place for racist abuse in any society, it cannot be compared with people using "fat" or "ugly" or "ginger haired" as terms of abuse, even though that can be hurtful. Racist abuse is vile, and totally unacceptable in every form, so if we are confused about the understanding of what's never acceptable, then let's get some consistency in our thinking and understanding of the problem.

And it cuts both ways, The concept of racism hardly exists in some countries. Imagine being charged extra for something because you're white.

So you're tying me up with a bunch of other people who voted BNP?

Irony.

posted on 8/1/12

No I am not duck i'm saying that Barnsley is now a BNP strong hold, that's a FACT, I know you may struggle with that but it's the way it is and that on a thread about political correctness that is something that is far more worrying than anything about a couple of idiot players or fans at a game.
