Yes we do have Joe Lewis, and I would say without a doubt He has used his skills and judgement as a businessman to assist us ..He did after all appoint Mr Levy, and no doubt has assisted in his knowledge of running the club as a business and maximising profit streams.
However, You said: "you have Joe Lewis and he has bankrolled a lot of big purchases" - and that is not true, we are buying sensibly and Mr Levy is leading the field in making the club financially progressive whilst giving the manager the tools to be more successful on the pitch.

"You can lock-down key players, but if a player then becomes one of the best in the world in his position like Modric or Bale, are they going to be happy without a wage increase?"
Depends on the terms to which they signed up for, does it not.
"If a player isn't happy, then more often than not they are no longer a key player."
Player happiness has nothing to do with whether they are key.
Demonstrated at Spurs by Berbatov, and the Modric saga.

Apparently reduced it by £30m in the summer
----------
Konchesky, Maviga, Bruna, Jovanonic, Ayala. Insua, kyrgiakos, poulsen, n'gog, meireles, cole (loan) and ince left the club in the summer.
Henderson, Adam, Doni, Downing, Enrique, Coates, Bellamy and Bijev came to the club in the summer.
You telling me they reduced it by 30 million in wages?
------------------------------------------------------
Apparently so.

States it in there. Surprising, but I trust the telegraph. Laugh it up.
Player happiness has nothing to do with whether they are key.

Generally if a player isn't happy, they wont peform as well, and can be disruptive rather than key. Players are only human. Its only natural that if they reach a point where they really want to move or want more money they will do what they can to get it.
Modric refused to play in the first game of the season did he not? Sure Redknapp stated Modric deserved more money, so he obviously thinks he needs more money to keep him happy.
Berbatov got his move. He didn't play in the games at the start of the season before his move. So obviously doesn't support your point, if he's not playing he's no longer key.
Being a key player has nothing to do with whether we can/do keep them.
Carrick was a key player. We didn't keep him.
Berbatov was a key player. We didn't keep him.
Modric is a key player. We did (for now) .
Key players can be measured by the void they leave when they are gone. All the above are/were key players for Spurs.
Don't see where you've gone there, was player happiness I was talking about.
Modric states he wants to leave, he doesn't and refuses to play. That was an effort to get his move, he didn't so he had to get on with it.
Berbatov wanted to leave, he didn't play in the first games of Spurs season and got his move.
Both were key players, wanted to leave, made efforts to do so. One was succesful, one wasn't.
I'm pretty sure Redknapp then stated Modric deserved more money, obviously looking to keep Modric on his side.
Come on Spurs fans lets be honest about this. Over the course of the premiership our average annual spending has been reasonable but we did go thru a 2/3 year stage when we were spending money at a ridiculous rate, most of it wasted I may add.

Thats just 3 players there are plenty more. Levy backed every manager with cash and plenty of good buys were made as well. Now Levy has obviously stopped wasting money and we are a better off for it, but to deny how wasteful we have been is just rank stupidity. Fortunately for us Levy has grown into the job and despite some mistakes in the past IMO he is now probably the most astute Chairman in the prem and we wont go far wrong as long as he is with us.
Moyes is not having a pop at us all he is saying is that its tough watching sides pull away from him, his hands are tied financially so he has to work twice as hard tactically to stop the opposition playing.
IMO he has done a great job at Everton considering their position but somebody really should ask where their money goes. They got big money for Rooney and Lescott yet every year they seem to get further in debt. I wonder what Darth would find if he got hold of their books
"Don't see where you've gone there, was player happiness I was talking about."
A player being "key" relates to their importance to the team.
Specifically : its performance.
The reason a player is not playing in a team (injury, strops etc) does not change their importance to the owning club.
Understand now ??

Disagree completley.
If a player no longer wants to play for the side, they are no longer a key player. Tevez was a key player for City last season, never got his move, still refuses to play. He's no longer a key player, yet he is still their player. Moreover the fee they will get is likely to be reduced as he is desperate to move.
"Come on Spurs fans lets be honest about this."
WE ARE, grandspurs.
Otherwise we wouldn't have volunteered the info we did.
Levy has moved from being some ENIC bod to someone who understands the nuances of running a football club in conjunction with being a business.
I wish other clubs every success in finding their Levy.
"Tevez was a key player for City last season, never got his move, still refuses to play. He's no longer a key player, yet he is still their player."
Couldn't think of a worse example.
Tevez is no longer key, because <Citeh> can now perform at the same/better level without him. For the prior 2 seasons, he was IMHO indeed key.
Anyway, the points remain.
Spurs have been securing players they deem to be KEY to the current/future performance of the club (Bale, Modric, Sandro etc) on long-term contracts to reflect this view.
Players having disruptive sentiment is an orthogonal notion.
Feel free to argue otherwise in the face of Pav etc having his strops about the club.
Your points are nonsense. If a key players leaves, it is obvious they are going to be replaced. They have to be.
If Tevez was still happy, he would still be a key player in the team and probably still captain. They might not have signed Aguero if he was still happy.
Obviously you want key players on long contracts. But when wages in that contracts no longer represent what a player can get elsewhere it is only natural he will want a new deal. And so while the long contract ensures you will receive what that player is worth in terms of a fee, it doesn't guarantee that a player will remain key to the team. It is only a contract.
My "point" is that you appear to equate being "key" to a football club as wanting to stay.
I equate being key to a club as the difference in the teams' performance when said player is or is not playing (for whatever reason) .
If the above is so, I agree to disagree (and end the discussion) .
WE ARE, grandspurs.
Otherwise we wouldn't have volunteered the info we did.

No some are being honest but others are distorting the picture by giving our net spend over the prem years. This is yet another stat that distorts the truth we went thru a terrible 2/3 years of wasting money ridiculously.
Oh you can do anything with averages.
The yearly transfer data shows the details though (players, costs etc) , for those who want to see all the s.
The past 3 yrs is without doubt where Levy has absolutely got it spot on.

Nah I have not seen or heard from Spurcat for ages. To be honest knowing him I dont think there is enough football content on ja for Spurcat, not sure but that would be my guess
We need the wise one to calm us in these days of headiness.
Also Moyes shut up, you're useless with money. Look at all his big money signings, they've all been pants apart from Fellaini.

Feillani WAS our big money signing & Baines at 5m...who wouldnt have done that deal! & the guy on about wasting the Lescott money - we bought Distin with that aswell who is rock solid, I do see us getting spanked by Spurs tomorrow night though!
