The manager said in his interview.
I really don't know what United should, 4-4-1-1 is the most effective way United play but it's not good for playing against Arsenal's 4-1-2-3 shape.
I'm swaying towards matching Arsenal and having Welbeck sadly on the bench.
I'd have Carrick holding with Anderson and Jones in midfield (I'd like to see an energetic combination in front of Carrick) with Nani and Valencia flanking Rooney, same back 4 as today.
I think Jones or Anderson need to play, we need someone with enrgy to hassle and disrupt the Arsenal midfield. Rooney and Welbeck I think could work, as Rooney often drops back into the midfield, and both are very hard working and don't give the opposition too much time on the ball - this is the key to beating Arsenal.
Scholes should not start. He cannot keep up with the pace of a match with Arsenal. I actually think playing Arsenal is one of the most physically demanding fixtures in the prem. Not for Scholes.
Midfield for Arsenal, Carrick, Jones, Anderson and then Valencia, Welbeck and Rooney.
This has to be how we line up. Nani is horrifically off form and needs to be dropped to sort himself out.

He should be fine for Arsenal
get in,and OP that was his 8th of the season just to confirm
4-4-2 with welbeck and rooney is preety defensive since they close down and drop back. In any case we won them using 4-4-2 at home, why not trust the team to come through? We may get a red card like at city

We thought last season we'd be alright using 4-4-1-1 because Rooney drops off anyway to help out in midfield but it didn't help, Arsenal still dominated. We need a proper 3 in midfield, especially at the Emirates.
4-4-2 won't work at Arsenal
That's true. But in that game Anderson was absolutely shocking. And Hernandez doesn't offer as much as Welbeck.
The reason I would prefer 2 up, is because Rooney is rubbish up top on his own. He doesn't have the discipline. He gets frustrated at not being on the ball all of the time, and drops deep - this congests the midfield, and then makes it hard to break as there is never anyone in the box. I'd rather see him play wide, or be dropped.
4-3-3
Anderson, Jones Carrick
Welbeck, Rooney, Valencia
Rooney is rubbish up top on his own
----------------------------------------------------
He didn't do too badly up top on his own at the Emirates two seasons ago.
True. But that was two seasons ago. Whenever I see him play up top on his own more recent he's not been as good.
He gets isolated, and then frustrated, and a frustrated Wayne Rooney is a liability. He likes to be involved in everything.
The big problems United had at Arsenal playing 4-4-1-1 were IMO
1. Song in Rooney's space
2. Hernandez not doing much
3. United being unable to exploit the wings on the break because wide players were naturally deep.
4. United's lack of a holding player meant the hole was always available for RVP to drop into or Arsenal's midfielders to run into (the system meant that Carrick couldn't operate as a holding player as he had to provide midfield support).
Playing 4-1-2-3 instead of 4-4-1-1 would solve all those problems, whereas they would still exist (apart from the Hernandez issue if Welbeck is fit) if we go 4-4-1-1 again.
The question is how much would Welbeck's performance help United to overcome the problems associated with playing 4-4-1-1 against Arsenal?
I don't know if playing Welbeck is as important as making sure United are well suited tactically to facing Arsenal.
Sir Alex could always bring on Welbeck later in the game if a change is needed.
Welbeck on the left wing is pants. If people suggest we drop Nani for Welbeck then woe to you. Such a stupid idea! We should go 442 with Welbeck as a forward not a bloody left winger
Welbeck wouldn't be left winger it's 4-3-3
We don't need Wellbeck against Arsenal , Nani will who that game on his own well with a bit of help from Evra .

You seriously are thick. If we went with Welbeck and Valencia instead of Nani. They would not be forwards. Valencia as a forward He would be out wide and so would Welbeck. It's not our style to have forwards hence why 433 does not work as we just put them out wide and Rooney gets isolated. Nani has to play this match as we need some sparkle! I would go 442 with Nani on the left and Anderson center with Carrick. Last year 442 did not work because we played Hernandez, who we all know can't do anything really with the ball. Welbeck is a better player who has everything, so it should work! It's a shame Nani is playing on the left because he is 10 times better on the right but he is the best we have got on the left, so has to go there.
