Alick Jeffrey`was without question the greatest player ever to come from Doncaster Rovers. His first game for them was when he was 15 years of age. He had already played twice for England U-23's by the age of 17 and he was on the verge of playing for the full England side. He was going to be snapped up by Manchester United. The Manchester United Assistant Manager Jimmy Murphy called Jeffrey, "the English Pelé" - Jeffrey was the most complete forward he had ever seen. He could shoot with either foot phenomenally hard; he could head the ball with great accuracy and he could land a long pass on a sixpence! The manager of Manchester United at the time was Sir Matt Busby, and he said that if he had signed Jeffrey, then Bobby Charlton would never have played for Manchester United. Sadly Jeffrey broke his leg playing for England U23's against Bristol at Ashton Gate in October 1956.
See what I mean? Some people just can't help harping back to the past
Now that did make me laugh, fuzzy got people on a hook, hhhhmmmm,
Fuzzy, stop it, stop it, I don't think they have noticed yet!
Yes nostalgia ain't what it used to be. Fair cop, but a bit of a cheek. Hope it heals up quickly though.
Brill result for us, moves us clear of the bottom 3 , although I hope the 2 guys, one who suffered a heart attack and the other a seizure is ok ;(
Hmm - I'm getting too good at this. I wasn't trying for that one
You took it well Nookie.
By the way you were spot on about AJ. he was No1 and SOD No2,
Sorry I shouldn't have said that.
I think Alick would have been a SOD type of player
You're pushing it a bit far now Fuzzy, settle down.
Alick the Great, I was fortunate enough to shake hands with him in1965 when he gave me my runners up medal, nostalgia.
I'm guessing that by the lack of discussion about the game itself there's nothing to discuss! Just the usual pattern we seem to have fallen into between home and away games and now 5 points adrift. I'm starting to feel like a manic depressive!
I actually thought we were OK before the sending off, then crumbled. We made a game of it with a good goal. Great save from James stopped an equalizer and that's about that
According to friends who went to the game with my tickets as I wasn't fit enough(not supporters of either side) City started off like a house on fire then Rovers had a good 5 min spell but as soon as City scored the first goal until they went to sleep for your goal Rovers were hardly in the game but in the last 15mins either side could have scored and perhaps they both should have.
As I wasn't at the match and only listened to the commentary I can't be sure but your keeper was certainly mentioned far more than James was except for the one good save and when he was in nomansland for the goal.
