great minds think alike i just posted about that goal on one of the other threads.what a buzz that goal still gives me.
fantastic footage, lee plays like messi lol
Thanks for that pal... Completely forgot just how good David Lee looked in that game!! Amazing to think he was on the opposite wing to normal too!!
Excellent find... I'd love a partnership like McGinlay and Walker. Not just goalscorers but real people with personalities and passion...
5*
great watch ---david lee--the great john mcginley/andy walker partnership they even make scott green look good
Just awesome!
A night I will never forget.
How good was David Lee?
How long did SJMc stay in the air for that header?
How minging was Scott Green?
That night Lee was unplayable wasn't he, if only he played like that every game!!. I Was in the Centenary Stand and we took about 8000 that night. Such a good team then, and yeah McGinlay/Walker was a goal machine of a partnership!! Cheers everyone.
So good I watched it twice. It's funny what you remember, I was 14 at the time, I remember this old dear getting on the coach afterwards, throwing her hands in the air at the front of the coach and shouting "WHAT A TEAM!!!!!". One of the happiest nights of my life.
Actually, I lied. I was 15.
I was 20!!!
And you call me old!! Only 5 years difference!!
The funniest part of the evening for me was before the game. Our coach driver parked on the other side of stanley park so we had to walk across it in the pitch black. Every now and again as we were walking you just felt your foot slip beneath you, then when we finally made it across i've never seen as many people wiping doggy off their shoes simultaneously on this grassy verge. I know its rank but we saw the funny side of it!!
LMB, you are an old fart.
Did I spot David Burke at right back?
No, left back. Sunbed was right back.
From memory the team was:
----------------------------------- Branagan -----------------------------------------
Brown ----------- Seagraves ----- Winstanley----------------------- Burke
Green ------------ Kelly ------------------ Patterson ------------------- Lee
-------------------- Walker - --------------- McGinlay ----------------------------
I've still got the programme from that night, signed by Walker and McGinlay.
Sorry, too many hyphens in previous post. We didn't have 2 right backs and 2 right wingers.
Burkie ... Thought i'd spotted ' 2 ' on his shirt, LH ..but now, with mi glasses on (and watching where he was actually playin'on the pitch! ) means it's defo no. 3 ..and left back!
Hard to believe we got David Lee from Bury! I'll bet our scouts haven't been to Gigg Lane for over 20 years!
Actually we got him from Southampton, who got him from Bury.
Haha ...that's right ....I remember him playing against us for Bury ..and hatin' his guts
Jeez ..I hope my memory tonight is being dulled by the Bushmills I'm on, and that it's not down to age
No worries, he's hard to associate with Southampton anyway, they signed him and went off him pretty quickly and got shut, I'd be surprised if he played more than 20 games for them. It was also a bit 'beneath' our notice, as he was at a Prem club and we were in Division Two.
What an individual performance from little man that night at Anfield though.
I was at the game at Liverpool but with all the Liverpool supporters. I was with my brother in law and we couldn't help celebrating the goals. No problems from the Liverpool fans and as we were leaving the ground they shook our hands and said we deserved to win and good luck. Them were the days.
I was in Upper Centenery stand and remember all the L'pool fans giving us a standing ovation after the match.
The Cups really do it for you when you are the underdog or the minnow. Nowadays it's lost it's appeal as we are expected to win most ties.
Thanks for posting that.
Great memories- went on the coach from Burnden with my wife, left our todler son (he's now 23 and an avid Wanderer!) with in-laws.
I still remember Souness going ape about the state of the pitch at Burnden for the original tie, which finished 2-2.
"Wait till we play at Anfield on a decent pitch"
Ha ha ha!!
I was at the 1st one at Burnden. Early kick off on a Sunday on a white over frozen pitch.
Ronnie Rosental was our nemesis that day.
Bambi legs Winstanley messed up their 2nd goal and I thought we had lost our chance. The replay was the greatest night for many a year, watched it last night and felt so proud, excited and with the biggest smile. That night got back in Bolton for a little drink and got home and watched it with my dad who had videoed it.What a night!
