As opposed to managerial greats like Steve Bruce?
I know what you mean.
Matt Busby left, and what ever happened to him ?
My money is on the pig getting more right
There again the muppets might strike lucky
Alan Hansen left, decided not to bother with the hassle of going into management, and now earns 30 grand an episode for match of the day punditry.
Fail ?
Alan Hansen was always too clever by half.
I suppose ex Liverpool players like lawrenson, hansen, thompson etc, have earned the right to comment, after having glittering careers, and knowing what it takes to win major honours.
As for the likes of nicholas, le tissier, townsend, etc, well your guess is as good as mine.
And don't get me started on Paul Merson.
As for failed managers, from one specific club, well try these on for size.
Steve Bruce, Steve Coppell, Stewart Houston, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Joe Jordan, Roy Keane, Brian Kidd, Bryan Robson, Gordon Strachan and Ray Wilkins.
I know what you mean.
Matt Busby left, and what ever happened to him ?
-------------
Ah yes, Busby captained Liverpool before disappearing completely.
jloo
Why are you so obsessed wih United?
The OP isn't a United fan.
Not sure Coppel is a failed manager... or Strachan, he has won titles in management.
jloo
forgot Lou Macari, Andy Ritchie, Jimmy Nicholl, Chris Casper, Henning Berg, Nobby Stiles, Bobby Charlton, Henning Berg, Andrei Kanchelskis, Jesper Olsen, Laurent Blanc, Darren Ferguson, Mark Robins, Arnold Muhren.... to name a few.
Keep obsessing!

Keane, Bruce and Robson have all had some success as well.
Jordan and Kidd have been very successful as assistant managers.
Alonso Liverpool to Real Madrid = world cup winner! Hardly a fail?
Masscherano Liverpool to Barcelona = Champions league and La Liga winner! Hardly a fail?
Arbeloa Liverpool to Real Madrid = World cup winner! Hardly a fail?
Op is a muppet of the highest order!
Bruce and Robson less so I think... but yeah - all the others have won something haven't they?

How many managers do you think have won something in the last twenty years.
Lets see if we can name them, I bet there are not many.
SAF, Jose, Grant, Hiddink, Ranieri, Wenger, Houlier, Rafa, Harry, Mancini, Kenny, McLeish
That is 60 domestic trophies alone.
I think we need to measure success a bit differently here.
To me, Phil Brown had success. He got Hull into the Prem and kept them there for a year.
Vidicshin - I quite agree! I was just taking the simplistic approach to prove a point.
If someone believes all those managers were failures - they are overlooking the fact that some of those failures have won honours in management.
I agree that someone like Phil Brown's achievements at Hull were an unbelievable success. Hodgson getting to the Europa final was a success even though he didn't win. I wouldn't call either of those failures - but I know some people will try and measure it in the simplistic way - even if they do count trophies some of the managers they consider flops have been successes.
Mr Mortimer
We are in agreement.
Ignoring the kak handed way the OP went about his original comments, I am still surprised more of your former players didn't try their hand at management.
Although some of your old legends did, like Souness, Sammy Lee, Steve McMahon, Kenny and Keegan.
When I listen to Macca on ESPN, he comes across as having what it takes to manage. You would even think Harry junior would be good at it.
It just sems they all preferd to not have any hassle and do punditry.
I’m not a Liverpool fan.
I think punditry is obviously much easier than actual managing. If the team wins doing what you say you look great – if it wins doing it another way then they win in spite of not doing it the right way. If the team loses you can slate the manager – if the team loses set up the way you say they should you can criticise the players.
I loved Souness as a manager… the image of him planting the Galatasaray flag at Fenerbache is one that never fades. I would love a manager at my club to care that much!
