However if we were to get promoted under Bates he wouldn't have to pay massive wages. Blackpool although they invested whilst in the championship on players like Adam and then got DJ Campbell in permanently when they reached the prem they hardly went crazy and still performed fantastic. They are now in a very healthy position. Reckon Bates wants us to go up as he has got to be slightly worried about the drop in attendances this season and if we come straight back down at least we would get parachute payments.

Sorry RSL but I don't buy it. His business plan is working on the basis that he's draining ER of any surplus funds. Howson was sold without replacement. Money from Gradel, Delph etc? If it doesn't come through the turnstiles, the sponsorship it will come through player sales. I don't doubt that he wants promotion because that's more cash even allowing for paying back the creditors but he won't part with case to do it.

I happened to meet a former chair of a well-known elitist Leeds United supporters' club after the recent Ipswich Town game. He had lunch with Bates the day after he took over at ER. Bates feels aggrieved at the way Chelsea (Abramovich) treated him after what he had done for Chelsea. He wants to put two fingers up to Abramovich and deluded as he is, he's hell bent on replicating the same sorry story here at ER.

He's on a mission unfortunately. I personally think Bates will almost kill this club before he goes so no, his plan didn't work at Chelsea but hardly any of his business ventures do. My late uncle was on the same board as Bates at Oldham, he showed similar arrogant tendencies there.
