Newcastle v Portsmouth

A game between two Europa Cup hopefuls started slowly with neither team really dictating play. Some careless passing from both sides never really saw any team play fluent football. However, Portsmouth found there feet and started spraying the ball about, neat play from Montolivo saw him get passed Barry and play it out to the wing for Vargas who, 1st time put in a wonderful cross, but Sigthorsson was day dreaming a little and was too slow in getting on to the end of it. A chance wasted for Portsmouth. However, this got them going and saw them create another couple of chances, in 17 mins a low drive from Vaart went just wide and a header from Sigthorsson in 21 mins was easily caught by Jaaskelinen. Newcastle were not at the races and were caught out again in 29 mins, when a slack pass from Koscielny saw it intercepted by Inler who calmly slipped it to Van Der Vaart..He took one touch and passed it to the on rushing, unmarked Montolivo who thumped it passed Jaaskelinen into the top corner from the edge of the box. From the kick off Newcastle tried to get into the game but Barry and Modric were getting closed down very quickly and could not get to grips with the ball in midfield with Inler and Montolivo putting in a terrific shift closing everything down. A couple more chances one for each team, 1st in 34 mins Cissokho made a terrific run down the left, playing a quick one two with Vargas, which put Cissokho in beyond Zabaleta, Cissokho drove into the box but selfishly shot wide when Van Der Vaart who was in a much better position was screaming for it. Newcastle then got their chance in 39 mins.. Hummels played a wonderful ball over the top straight to Llorente who laid it off to Di Natale, but the little strikers 1st time shot went just over.
The 2nd half started quickly with both teams playing much better football, 1st Newcastle, Krasic had a go at Cissokho, he cut inside and laid off to Modric who shot straight at Akinfeev, then sttraight from the kick a quick throw to Tasci who pushed it up to Kroos, he beat Boateng and crossed into Sigthorsson whos powerful header hit of the bar and over. This got the crowd going and the players were really up for this half, boots flying in and Barry was lucky not to be booked in 57 mins, when he went in over the top and right into Inler left knee, amazingly the ref let him off with just a warning. From the resulting freekick from Vargas, he played in a delightful ball to Sigthorsson who headed down for Van Der Vaart, but Boateng stupidly put his hands out and the ref awarded a penalty. Van Der Vaart blazed it over. A let off for Newcastle and they knew it. Barry screaming instructions to the players maybe had sunk in and in 65 Mins they equalised. Hummels to Barry, out to Krasic and a quicky shimmy he was passed Cissokho to the bye line. He crossed in and Llorente was there to meet the ball with a powerful header. With that goal Newcastle slowed the tempo down and began passing about in there own half looking for another quick break through and in 74 mins they got through, Kjaer slipped and Llorente was clear, only a fine save by the brave Akinfeev at his feet stopped them going ahead. The ball went from end to end with no more clear cut chances until 86 mins. Montolivo picked up the ball in midfield and drove at Newcastle, he played in Sigthorsson to leave him oneon one with the keeper, the youngster showing no nerves waited until Jaaskelinen went to ground and he cheekily dinked it over him and it trundled into the net. Not much Newcastle did troubled the Portsmouth defence and the game finished 1-2 Portsmouth

GOALS:

Newcastle - Llorente (Krasic) 65m

Portsmouth - Montolivo (VDV) 29m, Sigthorsson (Montilvo) 86m

MOTM

Newcastle - Llorente - took his goal well
Portsmouth - Montolivo - had a hand in both goals and was the best player on the pitch

WBA v Liverpool

A good game ahead sees strong line ups for both teams. WBA came out the blocks quickest and went close through Carroll who headed just over from a good ball from Adam, they had another effort after a crunching tackle from Gargano on Pastore, the ball went loose and Parker found Pepe out wide, he beat Taiwo and crossed in and again Carroll wasted a great opportunity. Liverpool eventually got going and they themselves wasted a couple of chances, 1st through Pastore, who beat Gargano after he slid in and missed, and he thundered a shot of the bar into Robinson arms. Then a good cross from Sturridge saw Cavani head just wide. Not many more clear cut chances until 35 mins, again Gargano robbing Pastore of the ball, Adam picked up and saw Carroll in space, the big striker got free from Ivanovic and was in, his shot was parried away by Mandanda, but Pepe was there quickest and slotted into the corner passed a stranded keeper. Maybe a fair score so far..Liverpool tried to get back and had a few breaks that came to nothing, however on 43 mins Taiwo sent Bale down the left who put the burners on to beat Rafina and cut inside, Jagielka however was very rash in the tackle and took him right out, the ref had no choice but to give a penalty..Cavani stepped up and sent Robinson the wrong way..

Half-Time 1-1.

The 2nd half started brightly again for WBA and they were 1st to have a go, a huge kick out by Robinson, 52 ins was knocked down by Carroll, the on rushing Parker went for it 1st time and a terrific save from Mandanda stopped it hitting the back of the net. It was end to end and Liverpool on 60 min were next to have a go, Isla made a run down the right and slipped in Sturridge who had cut inside, he got passed Lescott and tried his luckfrom outside the area, but it went just wide. Moutinho on for Diarra on 65m saw a new threat for Liverpool and he quickly made his mark, 68 Mins Liverpool took the lead. Gargano thumping into Pastore again but this time Moutinho picked up and saw Cavani in space, he played a defense splitting pass and Cavani was in,he rounded the keeper and rolled it into an empty net. Kanga was fuming and sent on Ba in a bid to get back in it. 75 Mins saw Lucas come on for Sturridge. WBA did get in it and there sub made more of an impact than Liverpools .79 Mins Parker rolled it out to Turan who then beat Isla, his lovely cross was met by Ba who put a bullet header passed Mandanda showing Carroll how to do it. This sent Costa on for Bale on 80 mins. It was getting tense and alot of poor passing and poor 1st touches, and this was to be the downfall of WBA, a very poor touch by Parker saw Pastore get the ball, he sent Costa away own the left on 87 mins, he beat Rafina and cut the ball back to Moutinho on the edge of the box, he took one touch to go passed Lescott, he only had Robinson to beat and he duly did with a low drive to the keepers left to leave WBA gutted. WBA threw everything at Liverpool and had one more chance from a corner, but again CArroll headed over. It just wasnt his day.

Full Time

WBA 2 - 3 LIVERPOOL

Pepe 35 (Carroll)
Ba 79 (Turan)

Cavani 43 (Pen) 68 (Moutinho)
Moutinho (87) Costa)

MOTM
Gargano - didnt give Pastore a sniff in midfield
Cavani - Took is two goals well
