We can sign players from English leagues now, the ball should already be rolling!
Hello, first time posting on here. Been observing from afar for a bit but felt I'd best join in as there don't seem to be many members on here.
I agree with you that Sturridge would be a great signing, especially for £6 million. It's a surprising price tag to me, what with him being young and English plus he proved last season at Bolton he'll score you a lot of goals. I've always liked him since he came on and scored a great goal against us at xmas 2008 (horrible ending to that game, Robinho 94th minute equaliser). Our name doesn't seem to be in the mix for him though, which is frustrating as like you said we need to be looking at players who can definitely hack it in the Premiership.
Didn't think Keane did too much at West Ham, though I'd be happy if we signed him, hopefully he could find his form again with us as many players have done in the past. If that was the case he could be a steal.
Papiss Cisse would be an exciting signing, his record in the Bundesliga is impressive and I think he would translate well to the Premiership. Problem is if he did he'd be off in a couple of seasons to bigger and better things, but that's just how it is for us unfortunately.
As for the wages, that's just the reality of the modern game I think, if we're going to try and compete for these big signings we have to be prepared for the wages that accompany them. In fact we're having to offer more than others as an incentive in some cases, because that's the only thing that would make us a better option over the bigger teams we're competing with.
I'm glad we didn't sign Vucinic really. £16 million was a lot for a player who isn't in the Roma team based on form. He wouldn't have been interested in playing for us, and his wages would probably have been crazier than the ones you mentioned for Sturridge and Cisse.
I'm not sure what you'd really get for £5 million with a central midfielder, doesn't seem to be a lot anymore. That said I'm hoping £3.5 million Formica will come through this season, as everyone seems to be saying good things about him, and he could give us that creative spark and flair we severely lack in the middle anytime Dunn's not there (which is all the time). Personally I can't believe we, along with everyone else let Kevin Nolan go to West Ham for £4 million. He's a brilliant player who would have been great for us, and at that money I just don't know why we didn't at least try.
Oh and if Samba goes, then we'll have to get another central defender, and we won't get someone of his quality back for the £12 (or 9 after Hertha have their share) million we get for him. When Kean said keep most of the squad together I was kind of hoping he didn't mean sell our two best players and significantly weaken the best part of our team, but I guess there's not much you can do when Man Utd and Arsenal come in.
Overall, we need at least one player for each position down the spine of the team, a centre back, central midfielder, and a goalscorer, but I'm just stating the obvious there aren't I. Guess we need someone to replace Keith Andrews, getting his name on the back of my shirt seems regrettable now. Actually I still don't regret it. COYB.

Best introduction ever. You're basically saying what everyone who regularly posts already knows - this board is sh|*. It was rather nice of you to try and improve it by becoming another active member amongst the what is essentially a half ars*d graveyard of a forum though.
It just isn't 606 still is it? Anyways, welcome along.
BBC606 must have been like this once upon a time. And there isn't that much for us to talk about at the moment. I will add that on my Football Manager sturridge is a good striker, as we have seen at bolton this year, but in 2-3 years kalinic is awesome. Also steve kean moved to spurs and took them down after harry retired.
I think DD sums it up nicely above. Nothing lasts forever, but it is frustrating that 606 has gone as we had a good group contributing and thousands of away fans as well for added variety.
On the subject of Sturridge then I think he would be perfect for Rovers, but firstly doubt he would come and secondly do not think he will go for 6 million.
Historically I have also been a fan of Robbie Keane, scores his fair share of goals but is always bright and inventive. Clever player, but do not think he is right for us at this time, unless we recruit some pace upfront.
So apparently Venky's have scrapped the transfer list that the backroom staff have been working on for god knows how long in favour of bringing in this "Marque Signing!"!?!?!
How many more embarrassing failing bids for Ronaldinho will it take before they realise that it is not going to happen?
Stop trying to make yourself famous and actually run the club properly!!!
This worries me as instead of building the club on solid foundations in the hope of achieving success in the future they are trying to make a name for themselves by being in the press all the time with these stupid bids for players that will never come a small town club!
I am in desperate need of an actual confirmed bid for decent player now....the suspense is killing me!!!
Ditto what most of the above are saying.
I thought Sturridge was impressive at the (short lived) under 21 championships (that said so was Danny Welbeck). I know he is at Chelsea but I doubt he is on over £50,000 a week but I might be wrong.
As for Robbie Keane he looked pretty poor at West Ham and seemed to have lost his composure in fron of goal.
Dunno where everyone has gone from proper 606, obviously there are various new options but you would have thought most people would come here with this being the exact same template. Hopefully it will get better.
I don't know why Kalinic wasn't getting a game at the end of last season. He only stared consistently when were playing 4-5-1 under Allardyce and there was only so much he could do on his own. He's clearly got a lot of technical ability and I think under Kean's more 'attractive' football regime he could do well, Hoillet wasn't doing anything under Big Sam, but now he's flourishing, maybe the same could happen for Niko.
Evening chaps. Also a long time observer / very occasional poster on the old 606. Likewise thought it would be busier on here.... perhaps things will pick up when the season starts. A marquee signing might help too
As for Sturridge, can't really see it happening somehow. As has been said above I'm sure if Chelsea decide to sell it will be for more than £6m....£17-20m seems to be the going rate for England U21s!
Hopefully something will come of the cisse deal....not because I claim to know anything about him but because getting excited about a big money striker is what this time of year is all about. Watching the new boy trot out in a pristine blue and white kit on a sunny august afternoon, not knowing whether he'll be a shearer or a grabbi....priceless!
Have they fixed the bug that logs you out whenever you come off the page? I'm just too lazy to log-in every single visit.
Welcome OOJW, I don't think of you as the new boy at all, in fact one of the all time quality posters I'd say.
We have the summer doldrums here right now, but I think the old 606 crew will be firing again come the season, hang in there folks we'll soon be laikin in t'slutch and chewing us finger nails down!
Thanks Duggy, but I was joking in the thread I posted. Glad you are here and am also looking forward to the forum being busier as the season approaches.
