Bales - agreed backroom over someone like Benitez, though my sister marred a 'pool fan and he still swears that if backed Rafa would have taken them to that elusive league title eventually.

We need to aim as high as we can and keep this current momentum

BTW

This thread has been a pleasure.....great comments and just for once we've actually been talking about our team with lots of common sense , no wums and no smileys ...Well not too many

I tend to agree with there Grandspurs, some people have their ceilings.

A great number 2 won't always make a good number 1. That doesnt stop them being a great number 2 though.

In my life I have had plenty of managers that have been great, make the step up and suddenly out their depth.

Squid yes it has been a good thread and far more football talk than normal but I already knew Bales was a good poster but 31 is new to me.

I only know about four smileys by heart, but I tend not to use them.

At the moment I have USB keyboard and Im nowhere near the screen, even if I clicked on the smiley link page I wouldnt be able to read what I'd have to type.

Had to do it! It's always good to have a decent debate (especially if you can sneak a bit of Chelsea-bashing in there) with you guys.

It seems - if I may be so bold - that we're largely agreed that Harry will go and whoever takes over primarily needs to keep the squad together.

Promoting from within and having a strategy of continuity would be preferable but none of the candidates give me much confidence. I'm not saying they definetly couldn't do well but I am not convinced it would be worth the risk.

Having said that there is obviously some risk attached to whoever is appointed. I prefer to try and get someone with a proven track record in top management who can exert authority and command respect. I'm not sure who that would be but whoever is chosen by DL I am prepared to give my full support to.

Ive seen you about Grandspurs, but I work nights and on weekends (currently on holiday - well lying in bed and doing nowt) so I have a bit of time to post.

I tend to over type as well, to make sure I get my point across and I think it makes me look smarter than I actually am.

Off topic - Sunderland 1-0 Arsenal

I want Mourinho but dont think we will get him I personally think it will be Moyes and if we are going to take gambles on relatively inexperienced manager I would go for Houghton or Lambert at least they both have some experience.

My biggest dread is Klinnsman to be honest I dont think he will be the answer.

Park lane

Good comment

I do wonder who and what "rank" of manager will be brought in if Harry goes

Easiest way out of this is for Harry to stay

BTW Park Lane said "continuity" so he must be well posh

@ Bales, loved the Chelsea bashing, normally it would have been interrupted by one of their lot, but I guess they have their own worries today to notice our threads.

Im also in two minds about whether Harry will go, with the current England setup we are in a transitional period. Whereas with us, we are on the way up and getting plaudits.

Personally I think him leaving us for England, well may be a dream job, I think it will be something he regrets.

@Park Lane Geezer, agreed I will be behind whoever Levy decides upon. As I said before he has seemingly learnt on the job and improved so I think he'll get whats best for us, he won't make the same mistakes again.

@ Grandspurs - Agreed to take a risk with Chris, I don't think Jose will come to us, can't see Klinsmann wanting to leave California, he stayed there when he was managing Germany, so I can't see him leaving there, and frankly I can't blame him for that. (though I'd rather live somewhere with seasons).

On a serious note managers tend to be a reflection of their playing career .

Jack Charlton dour no nonsense get in your face, same as he played.

Roy Keane lets try to bully everybody the same way he played.

Hoddle, lets make it look slick and silky same way he played.

The ones who generally seem to make the best managers are the players who are used to pulling the strings on the pitch by spotting gaps and passes that others do not see. I think Teddy would make a great manager if he decided to go down that route but also take one major thought on board.

Like it or not the 3 best managers we have seen in this country over the last 10 years have been Mourinho, SAF and whinger and the thing all 3 of them have in common is that none of them were great players.

As i said earlier it takes some special skills to be a great manager and being a great player is not part of the requisite which is why the likes of Bobby Charlton failed.

Anyone who wouldnt want Jose is missing a few screws if you ask me. But that is irrelevant as we can't afford him and I really doubt he would want to come if we could.

I'm surprised noone is mentioning Capello. Whatever happened at England, the guy has proved he has what it takes as a club manager. He is more experienced and decorated than anyone else out there. The only concern I would have is his English, though I think it is easily good enough to communicate what he wants from the players.

Grandspurs One tries old chap.

Squid, if Harry were to by some miracle stay that would be fantastic, the best outcome, but what are the odds?

31 seconds, Levy has impressed me greatly the last few years although I wasn't happy at the way Martin Jol was treated but that is now all forgiven.
