remember seeing Chelsea and City put out their youngsters out against us and thinking, well at least we take it seriously

may not be the cup that most would choose to win, but we are there on merit, and its a cup final not a league game, know which i would rather be watching today.

Please name all the youngsters both teams used

of course you're there on merit. When other teams don't try, they don't deserve to be in the final

Arsenal vs Tottenham is actually quite exciting for a league game, Arsenal lead 3-2 having led 2-0.

Admittedly Norwich vs United is a bit boring, United looking to shut out a 1-0 win.

have a good day.

It's not just a matter of naming youngsters. Chelsea were a total shambles, and City looked nothing like the side that lead the Premiership. They simply didn't have the desire to win the ties against Liverpool.

And look at Uniteds team selection against Palace;

40 Amos
06 Evans
12 Smalling
20 Fabio Da Silva (Fryers - 37' )
21 Rafael (Pogba - 64' )
13 Park Ji-sung
25 Valencia
28 Gibson
09 Berbatov (Morrison - 46' )
27 Macheda
32 Diouf
Substitutes
34 Lindegaard
38 Keane
51 Fryers
42 Pogba
49 Morrison
52 Cole
53 Lingard

Must admit it was surprising to see Fergie pick a team that weak.

It was partly arrogance, but i don't think he was too disappointed to lose.

A team who wants to win trophies?! Crazy!! What has the world come to when a team takes a cup seriously and wants to win silverware.

In other news, Arsenal lead Tottenhan 5-2.

To think Liverpool couldn't score one against Spurs at 'catgate.'

For many premier league clubs, the priority is not winning trophies, but qualifying for the CL or simply staying up.

Cups are de-valued when they're not taking seriously by the bulk of the entrants.

the other big clubs all play in europe, if Liverpool are in Europe next season expect fringe players to play in the CCup.
Also if you look at who has won the trophy in the last 20 years you will see it is more often than not the big clubs.

Ask any footballer and I can gurantee you that they would prefer to win a cup than finish 4th. When Grandpa Gerrard is chatting to Grandpa Carragher in 30 years time do you think they will reminisce about the trophies they won or the seasons they finished 4th and won nothing.

Man United haven't done too badly in it recently, wi' kids.

And Liverpool are able to "take it seriously" as they failed to qualify for Europe this season.

Were they still putting out all the first choice players in previous seasons?

i totally disagree with that, its not the finishing 4th, its playing in the Champions League against Europe's elite rather than winning a cup against reserve teams and the likes of Cardiff.

-------------------

So you think that the pinnacle of a footballer's career is to make up the numbers in Champions League? Winning it would be but to make up the numbers as Arsenal and Chelsea have done in recent seasons is no achievement for a footballer. Its not really that much different to Steveage having a good run in the FA Cup.

Winning a trophy is an achievement, whether it be the Carling Cup or the European Cup, and anyone who thinks otherwise has been conned into believing the myth that top 4 and Champions League is considered success.

Football is about winning things. Why do you think there are endless debates between fans about which clubs are more successful. Its not about the number of time they been in a competition but the number of times they've won it.

you are thinking like a fan and not like a player. Players are selfish and think of themselves, the prestige is in the Champions League whether you win it or not. Most of the foreign players or their families will never even have heard of the Carling Cup.

surely as a player you would want to win silverware, not turn round and say but i played against Real and Barca once even though i didn't win anything?

posted on 26/2/12

"Honestly if I win, I win, if I don't, I don't. I won't lose one second of sleep over it. I've had a great career and enjoyed it but is it defined by trophies? No – and it never will be. I don't even know where my Scottish Cup medal [won in 2005 with Celtic] is."

Who said that ? Craig Bellamy this week.

and here is another quote
"Towards the end of the meal he asked me what I would choose if I were offered an FA Cup winner's medal or another season in the Premier League. The answer, as I told him, is another season in the Premier League. Sell out I may be but stupid I ain't."

-----------------

What are you talking about? They may not have heard of the Carling Cup per se, but they all know that there are cup competitions in every league in the world. And as a player they will want to win those.

The Carling Cup is the lesser of the 3 trophies available in England, but a trophy is a trophy.

The Champions League is the biggest tournament in club football, but its not an achievement just to play in it. Its an achievement to win it. Do you think that a player will reminisce about the one time they played versus Real Madrid or the time they won a trophy.

Players are selfish, and being selfish they want to win, not just take part.

again you are thinking like a fan, you want your club to win trophies, so do I. Players have different priorities, look at my previous posts for quotes from your own Craig Bellamy, he doesn't care less if Liverpool win the cup today or not. I am afraid that is typical of the modern day footballer. This isn't a pop at Liverpool all players are like that. One of the worst was Ronaldo who valued his personal awards - World Player of the Year etc. above cups and trophies.
