Yes he can cover LB, RB, DM and is really good from what I know. but its not gonna happen.

I'd definitely take him at Arsenal. He's definitely better than Djourou, Vermaelen and Mertesacker. He's on a similar level to Koscielny.

He also scores an unbelievable amount of goals for a defender, that's a very welcome bonus.

I would love to have him but no way is it going to happen.

We already have Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelan, Djourou and Miquel as Centre backs who will be with us for the long term. The horrible news was Djourou signing a new contract. If that hadn't happened, then I would have expected a defensive arrival in the summer.....

kamran, i think you are a bit harsh on vermaelen. he's a quality defender. hasn't had the best of months but you must admit how good he is at his best.

He's just one of those players you have to have in your squad. He can play at CB, LB and CDM. Plus he's equally effective in all three positions. Fantastic player. He's like a bigger and better version of Vermaelen.

gunners, don't think he is being too harsh on Vermaelan. Even Belgium prefer Vertonghen as CB over Vermaelan (who now plays lb)

Talking about Belgium, how good is their squad?

Kompany, Hazard, Vermaelan, Courtious, Fellaini, Hazard, Lombaerts etc etc

yeah Vermaelen is overrated by our fans just a tiny bit. He's been class in the last couple of games though. Hope he keeps it up

What I don't understand is why we went for Vermaelen instead of Vertonghen a few years back. Probably because Vermaelen is more experienced.

I've been crying for Wenger to sign this guy for over 2 years as some of you may know from old 606!

With the injury problems we have at Arsenal then he is perfect for us. He can cover at LB, CB and DM and is a LEADER! His contract is up in Summer 2013 too so we can get him for cheap, I reckon £12M at the absolute maximum (I think maybe we can get him for as low as £8M).

i admire kamran's backing of koscielny. i would have admired it more if he hadn't jumped on the bandwagon after i started defending koscielny last season when he was getting roasted by all our fans.

i do think he is a better defender than vermaelen but vermaelen is crucial to our team's spine.

Has Wenger ever said anything about him in interviews? At least if he rates him we can get our hopes up. I'm worried that we predict loads of quality signings again and then the summer is a disaster

Vermaelen was a BEAST in his first year, shame he was out last year. Hopefully he will be back to his best

We have too many defenders. It'd be miraculous if Wenger went for quality instead of being satisfied with mere numbers in the squad, most of them dead wood.

Exactly Batmanu. One of our centre backs is guaranteed to miss a huge chunk of next season with a serious injury, that leaves us with 3 established centre backs to rotate in 4 different competitions. Those 3 will pick up niggling injuries and suspensions so we definitely need another top class centre back.

Gibbs will play 1 game and miss 5 games for pretty the whole season, this leaves us with Santos. Surely we can't rely on him for a whole season?

And the only defensive midfielder we have at the club is Coquelin, so Vertonghen can cover for him as well.

I honestly don't think he is Batmanu.

Btw Vertonghen is very good in the air. We don't have a single centre back other than Djourou who wins almost everything in the air. Koscielny and Vermaelen are nowhere near good enough in the air.
