will he buy another asian player to appeal to the asian market?
===

do you honestly think SAF would buy a player just to sell a few shirts in the far east?

Kagawa is a fantastic player and I think he would do well for us and be relatively cheap, as well as appealing to the Asian market as you say. Not sure Park will leave though and we should be basing our signings on ability and not who will appeal to certain fans.

Henry - from the ruins we will rise (U5249)

im pretty sure having park has increased our image in the far east in terms of tv rights and shirts and we have sold more than quite a few shirts, gotta make money somehow

What was Dong Fanzhou? He certainly wasn't a footballer.

Kagawa is good... on FIFA.
haven't seen him in real life

given your success domestically and in the CL over the years i'm pretty sure your image globally would have increased regardless of the players.

you get fans from all over africa who support utd as well as asia yet correct me if i'm wrong but you don't have any african footballers on the playing staff?

Pretty much an under-hyped Goetze. Plays for Japan so less international interest and is a few years older so the media focuses on the German.

Very true, but I'm sure that isn't why SAF brought him.

Kagawa has been very good whenever I have seen him, tricky, good balance, can pick a pass, would suit our style nicely, but he is more of a number 10, and we have Waza. In fact, he seems to have more end product to his game than Gotze, who is very highly rated.

'luckily' it turned out he was a good player?

I don't claim to be an expert but I'd seen him play very well on the world stage for his country and even more impressively in the latter stages of the CL for PSV. I'd wager that the club put a bit more effort into analysing his capabilities before moving to bring him in.

Secondly, it was offensive at the time and remains offensive to talk about Park being bought for 'the Asian market'. Asia consists of a lot of countries, some of which have deep historical rivalries. I don't think, for instance, that having a Korean at United would have sold shirts in Japan or China. If an American team buys a German player, do we hear about the impact that will have on the European market? Will people in Birmingham, Cork and Naples start following Kansas City on the basis that a fellow European has signed?

...they may have had a point about Dong though.

What gives you the idea park is going. Park still does a good job so why not keep him. So many times park scores a big goal.

Chelsea home in cl, wolves home double etc, Arsenal home last year etc. He does it time and again.

Anyway his record is not great this season but still does a job for the team.

He wasn't much of a shirt seller either.

Park over the yrs has featured in Man Us biggest matches so Sir Alex obviously rates him. Can't argue with his performances either, always been effective when it matters although he does have a habit of falling over or losing his balance.

Keisuke Honda. Plays for CSKA and Japan.

Quality CM playmaker. And he may sell a few shirts too...

Kagawa is a player I think we should be after. Not sure if he's as loved in Japan as Park is in South Korea tho.

I think you have to be an utter fool to believe that a club such as Manchester United would sign a player just to gain greater appeal to a certain market.

Park first came to my attention at 2002 World Cup, when he scored against Portugal to help South Korea qualify for the knockout stage.

His career at PSV got off to a slow start because he was blighted by injuries, however he ended the 2003/04 season well. Anyone who watched the Champions League in 2004/05 will know what a good player he was and what an excellent season he had. He was one of the best players in the Champions League that season and was one of PSV's leading contributors of assists and goals that season. That PSV side was very unlucky not to be playing Liverpool in Istanbul.

Signing a player simply for their shirt selling ability is utterly stupid. Park was brought it for his ability as a footballer, and I don't think anyone here needs to justify what he has done for us, and how grateful we are towards him in his time at Man United.

I know that he's now on the 'slate and sell' list, like many of our players are during a season. Last season it was Carrick, Evans, Anderson, and this season it's Park, Anderson and Nani. I'm sure it'll stop pretty soon until someone puts in a terrible performance.

Also to read some people saying Dong Fangzhuo was brought to simply sell shirts?! He signed for us when he was 19, and was loaned out to Royal Antwerp. I believe getting 34 goals in 71 appearances showed he had some sort of potential as a striker, but didn't make it and we sold him.

If you're going to buy a player who sells shirts, he needs to be in your first team at all times.
