A week is a long time in football

Straight after the Cup final my parents and I hopped on a plane to stay with some friends in Cyprus. Given our severely miserable disposition (something about that defeat just really knocked us for six) we avoided all newspapers, websites and TV whilst we were away (stayed in Polis mountains, so it was easy to do), as we couldn't bear to be reminded of what happened at Wembley.

My Dad only took his work phone with him so as to avoid taunts, and in that time I only got one football-related text, on Tuesday, in which my Blue mate said something along the lines of 'You picked a good time to go away', which I assumed was in reference to the Cup final loss (and that he'd wrongly thought I'd missed the game).

Then yesterday at the airport I walk passed a news stand and catch a glimpse of the back of one of the papers. No prizes for guessing what I discovered.

Now, checking all the forums, it seems things have just gone mental at our club. So, would someone be so kind has to just give me a brief summary - highlights and lowlights - of the past week, so that I don't have to trawl through our 'in-no-way-biased-or-sensationalist' national media?!

Jones is actually a class player. I've never understood the taunts.

Got to be honest me neither...

"Jones is actually a class player. I've never understood the taunts."

I think it came from the comparisons to Baresi from a few fans not long after you bought him, which was a bit over the top!

I do think he will be a very good player, particularly if he sticks to one position.

That seems fair enough...

Although I am pretty sure Capello is not a fan but the (at the time) national manager.

I'm confused mate!!!!!
Polis in the Turkish side? When I served in Cyprus Polis was in the Paphos district which is the Greek side of the Island and the mountain range was the Troodos

-------------------------------

We based ourselevs in Polis but hopped over to the the Turkish side every other day, was only a short drive. I called them the 'Polis mountains' because I couldn't remember their name!

Polis was predominately a Turkish-Cypriot town until the Green Line was drawn. My Grandpa fought in Cyprus in the 50s when it was mostly Turkish, and his brother fought there in the 70s when it was mostly Greek. There are still quite a few Turks living there still, though (they moved back there when the border was relaxed a few years ago).

Sound mate, i thought i was going round the bend

Either very nice area mate i loved my time out there, Can you swap from one side to the quite easy these days?

Yeah, it's surprisingly easy. I didn't know it was possible (I'd envisioned some kind of North/South Korea DMZ!) until I visited a friend who told me her and her husband do it quite often. You need your passport, and it can also be difficult if you have a hire-car (depends on the company you've hired from, and your insurance).

Initially we wanted to go across simply so that we could say that we did it, but ended up going more often because it's far less Anglicised (no tacky bars blasting out the Macarena) and the beaches/mountains were generally less spoiled. The villages and towns did seem a little more impoverished, however, but we only stayed close to the border each time. My grandparents went a few years back, stayed in places like Nicosia and Famagusta, and said it was really nice.

No I know, a few fans reiterated it as well. Whoever it came from, it was still a bit over the top!

I don't really know any United fans that seriously made the comparison... at least in terms of talent... on here...

My real life friends are probably a bit young to have watched him play but I didn't hear any of them make the comparison either...

There were a few on here Arab (potentially the old 606, can't remember when this place started) as I remember arguing with them it was way too soon to make the comparison.

You know there are some posters on the united board that are capable of it, surely
