Raul Jimenez on Meslier

Irrespective of the tackle or opinions about it or the second yellow card for Jimenez ...

After he had been shown the second yellow and was sent off, Jimenez made his way to Meslier to see if he was okay once he was on his feet, they shared a few words, and it definitely looked like no hard feelings and great sportsmanship from both.

Jimenez impressed me with that, despite his undoubted disappointment at being sent off.

I'm not a Wolves fan and, if anything, prefer Leeds, but I thought it was a bit harsh. Both players were totally committed to getting the ball and I don't think you could apportion more blame for the clash to either one. It actually looked like Jimenez was 100% focussed on the ball and never actually realised they were going to clatter each other.

That said though, I do see 47years' point about the consequences for Meslier if he'd have been second to the ball. You obviously can't apply reciprocity for the 'goalscoring opportunity' rule, but I do think a ref would've at least produced a yellow for the 'keeper. From that perspective, maybe it was the right decision.

Moutinho's was definitely far worse though, and I agree that perhaps the VAR official was reluctant to reduce one side to 9 men when the Jimenez incident was so tight.

Having said all of the above, football produces loads of no-win situations for the refs. You only need consider how often even neutral fans are unable to agree over certain decisions. If we can all see it a specific passage of play differently with the same set of rules in hand, then surely it's a pipe dream to think that one day there will be no differences of opinion between refs.

Not a yellow for me. I’d be mad if that was given against us. However, if Meslier gets there a split second later, that’s a straight red.

Wonderful comeback though. Going only on the highlights that is. Loved the energy and passion the players showed, especially Ayling and Rodrigo. Their celebrations would've been fitting of a World Cup final. And from the Leeds TV commentary team. Brilliant stuff!

Regarding the possibility of a red card for Meslier if he is later to the ball, one has to look at the 4 “Ds,” :
1) were there any other Defenders between the attacker and the goal?
2) what was the Distance to the goal?
3) what was the Distance to the ball?
4) Direction - how close were they to the goal, which Direction was the attacking heading in?

I don’t think the situation meets those criteria and thus a red card for DOGSO would have been unlikely.

For what it’s worth, I thought the collision was just two players challenging at high speed for a ball, no foul but perhaps the yellow card was for poor judgment by Jimenez? 🤔

Jimenez was lucky to get yellow not red for his first tackle. Studs to the knee !

Am I right in thinking because it was a yellow, no VAR?

VAR will look at a yellow to see if it needs to be upgraded to a red but not for any other reason.

That is current protocol, but seems to make sense that if a YC is a second YC, and thus a RC, it should be subject to VAR review.

I am happy that it wasn't reviewed in this case though.
