Hardly ever post, but after that shower just wanted to commiserate and give a few thoughts on the future.
First and foremost we need to recognise that ETH is inexperienced in the premier league, has had virtually no backing but I believe at base is a good manager. Let’s give him some time and vociferous backing.
Second we need to, at least in the short term, stop playing anyone who is either devoid of confidence or has completely given up. This means:
1. Play martinez and Varane as the centre pairing
2. Play Malacia instead of Shaw from the start
3. Ditch both mctom and Fred and pair Eriksen and VDB in their place. Both have something to prove.
4. Elanga instead of Rashford - again something to prove
5. Spend the next week on defending as a team. If we can just not ship a load of goals against pool then it’s a start.
Nothing else to say really…

I think it’s fair to say that when Maguire joined we all had high hopes. The deterioration that we have all witnessed has been nothing short of cataclysmic. He’s obviously not good enough any more but also has lost all confidence and doesn’t know how to get back feeling good about playing football. It’s hard to fall so far. Doesn’t make it any easier for the fans mind…

The OP is right though in that this needs to be done in small steps and it has to start from the back. We can’t have Dave carry on the way he is. He gives the rest of the defence no confidence.
Shaw has to be dropped and for now Varane has to partner Maguire.
Dalot needs to be dropped. AWB is a better defender than him and is not any worse at crossing the ball.
Hopefully we will see some midfield reinforcements coming soon.

I’m happy to agree… I just hope that maguire can play his way out of this spiral of low confidence. I can’t see it happening without some time on the sidelines but let’s see.
