It took the great Sir Alec four years to win his first trophy. The FA Cup.
Just saying.

Comparing a managers 1st few years almost 40 years ago is utterly pointless.
ETH has won trophies but cup comps are often a lottery.
Performances still are not good enough for a manager in his 3rd year.
Things need to improve quickly or Ineos will have to pull the trigger.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Performances are good, we are failing to convert good quality chances. Certain individuals prone to error seem to have a contagion effect when ever they are drafted into the team. That contagion will disappear as the squad is overhauled further in future transfer windows. In the interim, it will frustrate, it will force us to question ETHs continued role at the club. To silence the critics ETH needs to pick up points, needs to ascend the EPL table. Coaches are paid rich sums for a reason, he has a problem that's been an issue since last season, he needs to find an answer fast.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you genuinely trying to claim that Fulham, Brighton, Liverpool and Twente games were good performances?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn’t describe any as good performances, but barring last night (which I missed), I wouldn’t say any of them were terrible. Particularly not Fulham. Liverpool was obviously a sheet show of individual errors.
Have we dropped a stinker so far this season? We’ve looked comfortably better than the majority of last season in nearly every game, I’d say. Possession-wise we have much more control (objectively), in chance creation and conceding chances, we’re also doing much, much better (again, objectively).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know you said you didn't see the game on Wed but it was quite similar to the Fulham game. Too slow and tepid.

The biggest issue atm is finishing, without argument for me.
If we’d had our shooting boots on, we’d have breezed past Fulham and Palace, and possibly seen a better result against Brighton.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Finishing is a problem but on Wed we didn't create one clear cut chance that I can remember.

That’s a worry against a team like Twente.
Last time I checked we were third in the league in chance creation, which of course only paints a small part of the picture, but shouldn’t be completely dismissed as a pointer to how we’ve been playing.
Spurs and Villa will be big tests. If we can create plenty against those two, I won’t be too worried. As I wrote above, getting and keeping Hojlund fit would be huge. His conversion rate last season was impressive. In that respect, he seems to be on a different level to the rest of our forwards.

We have been playing well at times in fairness especially away. Should have beaten Palace and probably would have beaten Brighton if it wasn't for a freakish bit of bad luck.
The 3 games at home other than Barnsley have been quite poor though imo.

Personally I thought we were fking crap against Fulham.
The amount of times they just ran through our midfield was hilarious. It was as if we had 8 men on the pitch at times.

Also the conceded goal against fc twenty is why Maguire needs to feck off to a championship side team.
What an earth is he doing diving in there, for a senior pro you need to be better.
That's not forgetting the other individual errors e.g. Eriksen too.
Onana should never even have been in the position to make a save but unfortunately he was because we are crap as fack, and he was facking sheet too.
The guy seems to lack the ability to save anything at the near post, and seems to lack the ability to not dive on the spot. Proper weird technique.

Agreed. It was implied by some that we were good that night because we didn’t concede 20 shots.

Our performances have improved, but that doesn't mean they are that good, and we aren't getting the results we need. Part of the issue is that I feel the expectation level has dropped, because of how we have played in the past 12 months or so. Any improvement is welcome, but we still aren't great, and nowhere near where we want to be.
With regards to the OP, cups are nice, but cups are no reflection of how good a team are - never have been and never will be. Great teams can win cups, but so can ropey ones. And for a club like ours, winning cups should never be enough.
SAF was a one off and no-one will be like him again. It's a different era and ETH has never shown that he has the communication and man-management skills to get us to where we really want to be - to think otherwise is simply dreaming, and even trying to compare him to SAF does him no favours either.
We will improve under him because we can't really get much worse, but the improvement won't be to a level which we really want. It will be someone else who can hopefully get us there

we will improve because INEOS have taken over the football side of the club and want to run the show like a proper sporting club should be run, after years of the Glazer circus since Fergie and Gill called it a day
INEOS' problem is that they have put their faith in TH as the first team coach. I think they might have to find out that the next coach they appoint might be able to take INEOS nearer to where they want to be than TH.

I agree with this. And there may well be more pain to take.
What I would say is the youth system is improving massively already and we've conclusively overtaken City in that regard in the last year or two. It doesn't guarantee a Cole Palmer but it shows we're improving from the ground up and hopefully that will bear some homegrown fruit.
But the fact we've done that shows we are getting things right from the bottom up. And we may be on the way up. I just don't think that will happen under ETH. But we'll see how things go. Having a strong foundation is always a good thing
