Quick - get Broad on while SL refuse to score!
Man that must be an embrassing for the England player. A SL player comes out and refuses to score any runs at the end of a match.
Well another disappointng performance and result.
It was so easy for SL they could afford to waste deliveries to make sure a player reaches 100.
Agree with the OP, Broad's short bowling has to stop or just pick someone else.
In another way at least we got close to them.
I stop watching near the end..The batsmen are to blame again..Theres no way 246 was enough on that wicket...
Drop Broad (for now), bring in Woakes.
Drop one of Bell or Trott, bring in Patel at 6.
Hoggy
Bell would surely be the more likely. Him and Trott are vying for the same position and Trott's record is still very good.
Also, I would bring in a better bowler than Woakes but I don't know who?
ginger
Yep Bell most likely to be dropped I suppose.
Not really his fault, but he's simply not an ODI no. 6.
As for bowlers, I proposed Woakes cause I'd like to see him getting more international experience (even though limited overs matches are not really his strongest suit). I suppose the alternative would be Tremlett, though his ODI record isn't that great either.
I like Shahzad but he is apparently out of form.
Broad is a better ODI bowler than tests but he is not doing his job and he is no number seven.
Just to blame the batsmen is too easy when our pace bowlers are incapable of threatening their batsmen.
Broad seems to have completely lost the plot, Dernbach is out of his depth at this level, Bresnan has yet to recover after his lay off and Anderson in the last two games hasn't looked likely to get a wicket.
AS for Bell the team management seem to be the only ones who think Bell is suited to bat in the low middle order, when his success at Warwickshire is batting at three, People constantly remind us he's only scored one century but fail to tell us he was batting at 3 when he did so. Most of his best scores have been as opener or at 3.
They have got to stop trying to put square pegs into round holes.
I use to think Bell was a medium pacer in the Mike Gatting mould (not his spare tyre).
If so, why doesn't he bowl anymore?
Chris Gayle would be available soon in the market
Personally i don't think the problem is totally with Broad. I do agree he is bowling badly at the moment, however, as far as i can see he being asked to bowl to a plan. sadly just one that isn't working. No one in the England camp is going to have a word as he seems to be doing what is being asked of him. Whenever he comes onto bowl thw field is set for short pitch bowling. To my mind England are trying to turn him into a rough
them up sort of bowler with pace, as we have no one else with real pace, so he's bowling to a plan, why else set feilds for short bowling when he comes on. England are not going to pick a bowler who can't pitch it up, and pick him for each game, unless he's doing what is asked of him. Sadly i feel he's doing the job Flower wants with this short stuff so i fear it will carry on for now, sadly. What a waste.
England are approaching ODI as if it's a short test match. Replace Kieswetter, and Dernbach with Strauss and Prior and there it is. This is how we approached ODI's many years ago and have continually failed,
We shall never achieve success in this form of the game until we find a number of specialist players.
You say england should use specialist players but who are you thinking of? Bopara, kieswetter and dernbach are some of the best short form players in the counties. Trescothic is the best but he won't be back.
The likes of woakes just aren't up to international standard. Yet. Patel? He has been tried again and again and is no matchwinner.
I think that england need to bring bell, Morgan and pietersen into the top 3 and let trott go in at 4. Cook and Strauss can stick to test cricket.
Cook is the captain. He will be there for a while.
Just look compare our bowling to that of SL. We bowl looking for snicks to three slips and a gully as if it was a test. They bowl straight wicket to wicket, giving no width for the batsman to swing his arms, this tends to force the batter to swing across the line.
When fielding restrictions are in place bowling straight is essential.
heres the problem
England arent that good at one day cricket. We just need to keep working, keep trying to find the right combinations and our younger players need experience.
Having said that its not all doom and gloom we're only 2 - 1 with 2 to play.
"Patel? He has been tried again and again and is no matchwinner."
When has Patel been tried 'again and again'?
He's only played 11 ODIs.
Picking a 50 over ODI team for England is not easy. We have to many batsmen who cannot bowl but players like Bopara are possibly not good enough.
Personally think our ODI team has 3 main problems at the moment, (no, not 'can't bat, can't bowl, can't field' )
1) Cook, Trott and Bell. Can we pick all 3 of them?
And, if we do, should they be stuck up top allowing bigger hitters to come in lower down the order?
2)KP and Broad. Two of our better ODI players historically, but both have issues with their form. KP seems to be playing a little better recently but keeps getting out when seemingly set. Broad has been poor of late, but is returning from quite a serious injury. Persist with them or not?
3)Batsmen who can bowl. Bresnan has been doing OK with the bat at 7, but it'd be nice to have a proper batsman there. Samit Patel would appear to be an answer but, if he were brought in say, for an out of form Broad, could he be trusted to bowl 10 overs? Could a solution be to bring in someone like Bopara (Stokes??) for Bell/Trott AND Samit for Broad, giving deeper batting + a couple of options for 10 overs?
Agree with you about Bopara, Gingerfinch, his display in the Twennytwenny earlier in the week was embarassing - however, I thought KP was more than a little culpable, going for a marquee shot when in the forties and well set. If KP had kept going, and Cook had fallen, I think England would have got the requisite 290/300.
Broad needs a rest, that's pretty clear.
Hoggy
Point three is why I am struggling to pick a team.
One of Trott, Bell or even KP need to go and be replaced by Patel, Bopara or someone of that ilk. This though does not solve the number seven problem.
"This though does not solve the number seven problem."
It would if you brought in one of Patel/Bopara/Strokes/Collingwood for Broad/Dernbach, or two of the above for Broad/Dernbach +Trott/Bell and used him/them as the 5th bowler.
So howabout a team of, say:
Cook(c)
Kieswetter(wk)
Trott
KP
Morgan
Bopara/Stokes
Patel
Bresnan
Swann
Broad/Dernbach
Anderson
More batting depth.
6 bowling options (+Trott and KP)
So, 4 bowlers plus Patel and Bopara?
This could leave us light in the bowling but hey we have to lose out somewhere.
