Unless Messi plays Stoke, we can never have a level playing field in comparing the two.

"How could you sit in front of your keyboard and type "pele is overrated, or messi is better than pele, or maradona is better than pele" i have never seen pele live or lived during his era, but watching his videos i have come to the conclusion that anyone saying in my face that anyone is better than pele will get memorable black eye from me. Stop being idiots and appreciate what the man has brought to football. Most of the tricks used in football today was created by him in the 50's and up..."

Maradonna was better than messi. Very similar club careers but maradonna single handedly - no pun intended - won the world cup for his country. Until messi performs for his national team he doesn't cut it.

I get annoyed that after everytime Messi gets played everyone says 'best ever' so losely. Gets overused more than 'World Class'. He is good, may go on to be the best but has to face the likes of:

Eusebio
Greaves
Pele
Maradona
Cryuff
Zidane
Moore
Romario

etc

People don't like Pele not because he wasn't good but because they feel he is a jealous pr!ck, also people of today get so sucked into the hype, only 30% of Pele's play was ever captured on video!

I think it's hard to compare, Messi is not the best ever but one of the best ever!

I really think it's very difficult to qualify the different challenges of different eras, leagues, and general circumstances.

However Maradona would party for 2 or 3 days straight, turn up on match day without any sleep and he was still the best player in the world x

he learnt that from George Best.

Pele was the greatest player that has ever pulled on a pair of football boots.

He could do everything that Maradona, George Best and Messi could do, (yes, in that order)...........
......but he could jump like a salmon and head a ball as hard as he could kick it..... and was much less selfish.

People try to detract from Pele by saying that he never came to Europe to prove himself........but he was told by the government that he could not leave.
And you didn't argue with South American regimes in the 60s.

Too much is made of Maradona in 86.....it takes a TEAM to win a World Cup.....Daniel Passarella was probably the finest centre back of his generation.

Pele won it in 1958 as a kid.
In 1962 he was mostly injured (kicked).
In 1966 he got very badly kicked around our country.
In 1970 (nuff said).

Oh....and he's NOT jealous of todays money.....he's a millionaire.

Couldn't have put it better myself

The way he burst onto the scene in 1958 was incredible. No one had heard of him before and he comes back probably the most famous player in the world. He had great skills, great vision, great heading and a great shot. He was also doing all of this in a time where he was getting kicked about in every game and was playing on much worse pitches than today, great player.

You can't be serious? To even put C Ronaldo anywhere near this list is a disgrace.

What about players like Eusebio, Cruyff, Van Basten, Zidane, the real Ronaldo, etc.

In my actual opinion Ronaldo (Brazil) is for me he was incredible. Did what Messi does now but also at the WC and is the top scorer of the biggest stage in sport but that's my opinion

because along with messi he is the most productive player ever. certainly not in the top 5 most technically gifted but he has become probably the best goalscorer ever along with messi

Well said, I remember well Pele bursting on the scene as a 17 year old, scoring two goals in the WC semi and another couple in the final in Sweden. Pele is still easily the best for me. I think supporters underestimate how good South American football was at the time Pele was at his peak. Vastly superior to European football, Real Madrid aside.

Just for the record I happen to think that players like Puskas and Di Stefano were also magical footballers, and there were many, many more, supporters seem to just get pigeon-holed with Pele and Maradona.

Ronaldo. Have you been on the wacky backy.

Puskas scored 84 International goals, how many has Ronaldo scored?

posted on 18/4/12

I think where pele loses out is because he didn't play in one of the best leagues in the world. That's why people count him out as the greatest ever
