Lee, while it's true that defenders and goalie's don't perhaps get all the praise they deserve, I'd say that it's simply because it's much harder to put the ball in the net than keep it out of it.

On the flip side, the attacking players get much more leeway than the defenders and the keepers. They can miss a number of chances and convert but one, and still be lauded as heroes while the defender/keeper, who may have denied the attackers on numerous occasions, get criticized for the one chance they have given to the opposition to convert.
I'd argue that jaw-dropping saves, timely interceptions, diligent marking and clean tackling take skill, too, and are as important to the team as the ability to score goals is.
Just how & why did Buffon not get the Ballon d'Or in 2006 I will never know.
Has to be Ronaldo (fat Brazillian one) Followed by Maradona, ZZ,

Fat Ronaldo made Henry look average.
For me it has to be Cristiano Ronaldo. Incredible player.
What about Michael Laudrup. He was a genius, triffic player who invented the through ball
"george best pele johan cruyff.
most exciting players to watch
maradona was briliant too "
Pele, Cruyff, Eusabio, Messi, Beckenbauer,Gascoine, Zidane Best.
All great players in their own right from different eras but i only ever saw one of them break a players leg cutting short his career through a cynical challenge.
BluePheonix
Pardoe gave as good a Best in that challenge. Wasnt even a foul.
Yeah got to agree Arsenal dog for me Pele is the greatest, got an amazing record. you can't deny it, just like Ali being the greatest boxer
anyone who says Messi is an ignorant unt
Yellow card for a snapped leg

Very true - but I'd say it's precisely because scoring goals is geenrally harder than avoiding them.

The fact that Kahn got player of the tournament at the previous World Cup might have influenced that. Nevertheless, it went to Cannavaro, a central defender - which I must admit I found slightly stereotypical considering it was Italy who won the thing.
Pirlo was also impressive in that tournament.

It was allegedly going to be given to Zidane, probably felt they couldn't give it to him after the incident with Materazzi.
I think where pele loses out is because he didn't play in one of the best leagues in the world.
+++
He played in the league that produced 3WC winning teams in 12 years you ignorant fool.
His Santos team also came over to Europe and pumped then EC champs Benfica(twice)
And anyone who mystifies Maradona's achievements with Napoli, as being unheard of...think of the ORIGINAL Man City, without the same financial clout.
Napoli went bust for millions having bought some of the World's best players.
Careca
Alamaeo
Bruno Conti
Spring to mind.
Pele was simply THE greatest player ever to pull on a pair of football boots.
He could do everything that Maradona could, plus he could jump like a salmon and head a ball as hard as he could kick it.
He was told by the government that he couldn't leave Brazil........thats why he never played in Europe.
You didn't argue with South American governments in the 60s.
Fat Ronaldo was better than Pele imo.
Messi is the best ever btw.
MafiaBoy is the best ever player, sadly, no professional club is lucky to grace his services.
