Is there a specific reason why this deal couldn't be done in January...?

Ajax probably wouldn't sell as they are in a title race (and they only get guaranteed Champions League football if they win their league).

And if true, that's changed how since the end of the January window to mid feb..?

Because this way he stays with them until the end of season and doesn't leave in January?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok I see that obviously... But why announce it now and not in January during the window on the basis that he is going to stay with them this season...and also if he is so integral to them winning the league this year given they are only 3 points clear of alkmaar would they even sell him to us such a paltry figure anyway...
The timing of this all seems a bit weird to me that's all... Whilst obviously being excellent news for us potentially
If he's not going to leave in January, why rush to get the deal done then?

Is a bit odd, but i guess in jan our team were trying to get immediate targets, that wasn't possible so they moved to next summer. Does seem ridiculously early though
Did he have a release clause? Why did we get him so cheap

They do love to sell an asset... don't they
It does show the relatively poor state of the Dutch league football wise.. that they can sell these three over 2 seasons and still be top and probably win the league again.
He had a release clause of around £25m but didn't want to go to Sevilla/Roma who bid for him at the time.
Supposedly only signed a new contract, removing the release clause, if Ajax agreed to let him go for a reasonable fee should a "big" club come calling.
Never seen Ziyech play. He any good?
Cost the same as Drinkwater..?

If I remember he's very mahrez like and has been good in the games against us and the other CL games I saw of ajax from last year, very good infact, maybe their best player at times and they had several other up and comers.
against madrid and juve he was fantastic.
Don't watch dutch league so can't offer much more than that.
An ajax fan:
"Ziyech is by far our best player, we were struggling a lot when he was injured. I hope some of our youth players will break through but it's gonna be hard to reach the level we have now without Ziyech."

He is rated very highly by fans/pundits, those that watch him regularly all seem to come to a similar conclusion that they’re very surprised he hasn’t move to a bigger club yet. And of course not just in the Dutch league, he has performed in the CL too against top teams.
In style he’s a creative, chance making player, from open play and set pieces. But also meant to be hard working (have to be to be in that Ajax side) and able to beat a man (if not electric acceleration/pace). He has played out wide and in central positions

And he’s left footed ðŸ¤

It'll be wonderful to have a forward thinking player who is left footed, especially playing from the right opening up the space for James to whip his crosses in.
