Sheffield are not stacked in his position, he's the 5th CB and they play 3 at the back. He's probably 4th choice behind their main 3. One of them is likely to get injured/rotated throughout the season. He can also play midfield but I reckon his game time will likely be in at CB.

Obviously a championship club would have been ideal.

Not a fan of the Ampadu loan.

Aside from the fact that Sheffield are stacked in his position and play in a highly specialised system, I reckon he could've done a good job for us this season in the DM position. Now Kante is the only player left in our squad capable of holding in midfield with 8s either side.

Considering Kante's injury record, this loan is incredibly short-sighted unless we're also planning a move for Rice (which brings up its own questions).

Gilmour, Kovacic?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Gilmour perhaps but I always worry about his physicality. He's tenacious but can still be relatively easily bullied off the ball by a bigger CM.

Kovacic doesn't have the defensive discipline to play as a lone holder. He did it a few times under Sarri but even then I'm pretty sure he had somewhat defensively-minded players ahead of him.

Ampadu wasn't making the bench in a lot of the Leipzig games or even sub appearances.

This loan surely can't get worse than that, well I hope not.

Speaking about Ampadu's arrival, Wilder said: “Ethan is an outstanding young player for Chelsea, and we’ve worked really hard to get his signature for the season.

“We need to thank Frank Lampard and the people at Chelsea for helping making this happen. We’ve got a good relationship with them and they know we’re going to take good care of him.

“It’s an important season for Ethan and playing in the Premier League for us is a good move for everyone. He brings a lot of qualities to the group and he’s someone we’ve tracked for two or three seasons.”

Do we see him as a CB long term? I was thinking more DM due to his height. 5'11 isn't short but considering our issues with set-pieces, having a CB on the shorter side isn't the best long-term strategy.

Nice words from Wilder, a manager I like and rate. Hope he stays true to his word and looks after him for us!

Not sure what position he'll be long term, I'm sure he'll just be grateful for game time regardless of position. Don't think his height is a problem in a back 3 or for Sheffield as most their side is strong from set pieces.

With regards to us, we should improve on set pieces with a keeper who can catch and take command. And hopefully by then we'll have a more established side.

On paper it's a brilliant loan for him at 19 years old

He plays CB for Wales, doesn't he?

Similar to Rice, we're linked to him and I don't know what position he's best

My gut feel is he's not quite ready or good enough for us... let's see what they do with him... Do we have the option to call him back...?

He'd hardly play for us unless we had an injury crisis. A loan makes sense but Sheffield could be like Leipzig all over again.

Hopefully he will get 20 to 25 full games for them.

That just leaves Romero as the cheap option.

Fabrizio Romano:

Chelsea are in advanced talks and really ‘confident’ to sign Edouard Mendy as new goalkeeper from Rennes. The agreement is going to be completed next few days. Declan Rice still in the list as next target too.

Could get Rice this summer if Hammers are going for Tarkowski

Yeah we already have enough midfielders

And it seems crazy to spend so much on him to play CB when there are probably better CBs out there.
