Not a fan of Caballero. Other than stopping penalties, he's rubbish IMO
I think we currently have 2 of the worst keepers in the league

Thing is we can usually find a decent no 2 for free
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Have we? Caballero has been so-so at best, and the less said about Ross Turnbull the better.
Our best no2s have either been club icons deposed like Cech and Cudicini, or buys like Begovic (who I think cost £12m).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Schwarzer
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We may have won the league in 2014 if not for his mistake in that fateful Sunderland game

Like even Krul from Norwich is better than our two keepers

Schwarzer wasn't good.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
P'ss off
The Liverpool performance alone
Swear Schwarzer barely featured in his 2 years
Because he's a no 2
But he stepped in when desperately needed which is kind of the point of that squad position
We shouldn't have seen as much of Caballero as we have

I don’t really see why if Mount, James, Abraham and Tomori all went to the Championship with much success playing regularly, Ampadu is above that. He’s not anymore PL ready than they were.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dame applies to Gilmour
Not much coming from the Mail but they are linking us with a move for Boubakary Soumare from Lille as an alternative to Rice
Never really had to worry about no 2 keepers for so long. Having had Cech for 10 years and Tibo for 4 years.
Become a problem last season mainly due to Kepa

I think Mendy would be a mistake. Can probably make a better signing next summer. Maybe even that keeper would still be Mendy at a slightly lower or higher price.
Especially making the change so late in the window. Would have been better to sort this out earlier.
--------------------------------------------------
It does feel like a half way measure between low risk fee/might get lucky & not giving up on Kepa.
If Kepa's happy with it & relishes the competition it could work I guess but it's an unorthodox way to approach it, and feel REALLY out of place in this window where we're targeting players & buying decisively.
But I will also say I've only seen YouTube footage of Mendy which is forming that opinion, but that's probably the last position on the pitch where you wanna be judging a player. So trust the club I guess

My take is that the club know that they have to buy a keeper this summer. We need a better keeper than Kepa was last season otherwise we are simply not going to get close to where we want to be.
If we're going to spend big on a keeper (i.e. £50m+), it should be on proven great keeper (ter Stegen, Oblak) or a keeper that is almost certainly going to be great (Donnarumma springs to mind) - I think we learned that lesson from Kepa. None of those keepers were available this summer. And with Kepa on the books, a move like that is financially impossible anyway.
So then if we're buying from the next tier of keepers , we may as well go for a cost effective high risk high reward option (which Mendy seems to be) because we're almost certainly going to be spending big on a keeper again soon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That is my take on it too

I thought two years ago he was the best number 2 in the league. Really rated him. Still do but always getting older
Now Declan rice is someone I really don’t understand the hype about. Jamie Ohara should be shot for his opinion the other day on talksport.
Also cheers boys who’s answered my earlier q
Rice is one of those who will either be surprisingly good or appallingly bad. To be fair i think some of the more underwhelming signings can be the better ones. Not to say that will be the case but best to have some optimism I guess
I think Rice looks really good and understand why we would want him. But I don't think we will get him this seaaon
Problem is what do we do when we decide Mendy ain’t good enough. Would possibly struggle to recoup the transfer fee so that’s another loss on a keeper.
That’s why I’m in favour of Romero if Utd don’t ask too much for him (basically anything more than £5m seems kinda high)
