Any person who holds multiple citizenships will tell you it’s possible to feel as part of the country your parent(s) are from just as much as the country you live in. If I was a footballer I’d be happy to represent Nigeria even though I’ve never lived there - why wouldn’t I?
Agree - CHO parents/larger societal group might have given him that feeling of cultural belonging

I disagree with all of you
Living in a country is a huge part of it for me, you arent representing a culture so much as cultures go across the somewhat arbitrary borders we have set up. You are representing a nation state which you should be an actual part of if you want to play sport for it
Id make a certain length of residency necessary for national team football
Would you make it the only necessity?
What plsses me off is that I'd be eligible to play for Canada in football because my English Grandad was born there yet I wouldn't be eligible for Canadian citizenship lol.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
But you can be, or feel, an actual part of it even if you’ve never formally lived there, definitely. Even if not for you, but for others. Representing a national team tends to broadly align with citizenship rules for the country which I think is pretty reasonable. So many players represent countries different to where they grew up..not weird at all imo
Laporte representing Spain or even Emerson for Italy is one of the few cases where I think it’s ‘weird’ the player is representing that country. Where they’ve basically moved to the country as an adult and is fast tracked to represent the national team. But such I suppose loopholes like that have to exist the way the system works
Telegraph had an interesting article regarding all this, which I agree with.
#EURO2020 is the first true post-multinational tournament - & shows the rules are right.
Euro 2020 the stage for a new generation of multinational footballers
Fluid regulations allow players to switch allegiances, reflecting a necessary understanding of their ancestry which challenges nationalist themes associated with the international game, writes Miguel Delaney
https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/euro-2020-dual-nationality-players-laporte-b1862004.html
I still meet people who who completely perplexed I have a passport/an a citizen of three countries.
Soz for more spam but again, interesting - From the available information, 175 of the 622 selected for Euro 2020 have dual nationality. As many as 23 of those possess triple nationality, with one - Wales’ Ethan Ampadu - having been eligible for four countries.
