4-2-2-2 (really a 4-4-2) would work with our players if we signed a more dynamic DM like Rice or Tchouameni.

Still holding out hope that we go in for Bissouma. Great on the ball and very solid defensively.

Admittedly, he lacks creativity but I think it'll be difficult for us to find a genuinely two-way midfielder (i.e. one who can sit and protect the defence while also providing assists for our attackers). Rice isn't far off but he'd also be insanely expensive. While Tchouameni is still extremely raw and is more of a dynamic B2B than a proper defensive mid.

Though in terms of midfield balance, a pairing of Rice+Kante, Bissouma+Kante or Tchouameni+Kante would still feel like it's lacking that genuine creative spark (i.e. the ability to create chances from deep) as none of them have the passing range you'd want/need. I think it just goes to show how difficult it is to find a properly balanced midfield pairing.

The 2nd half of that season was a difficult watch. After the Spurs loss, we basically shut up shop and lost all our adventurousness. It was 1-0/2-0 wins for pretty much the rest of the season.

Tbf if Gallagher can find the next level he is a two way midfielder

I don't think you need a midfield pair to have creativity if you have literally four offensive players ahead of them - as long as you can get the ball to them.

True - emphasis would be on the midfield two to move the ball as quickly as possible. If we let the opposition get settled in a defensive shape, that's when the lack of creativity from deep will start to hurt us.

Hazard was the only light really.

People point to Spurs as an embarrassing result, and while it is was highly influential in changing our style of play, I actually found the Bradford and PSG results more upsetting.

That PSG result made me so angry. Such a winnable match yet we played unbelievably negatively and ended up going out.

I want Gallagher to play every week or close to it. I don't doubt he is good enough to be a squad player, but I he needs 30-40 matches.

Rice-Kante would be a very good midfield pairing in either a 3-4-3 or 4-4-2, but I'd personally prefer Tchouameni.

Tchouameni and Kante may be a dangerous combo. Neither of them likes sitting deep as they're both more effective carrying the ball forwards/winning the ball higher up the pitch
